Other than Goth...

What music do you listen to? I mean all I ever hear people rhyme off are a list of Gothic Bands... Personally I have a wide array of music tastes. Why don't we list off some of our favorite NON-Gothic groups?

Some things I listen to on a regular basis,

Red Hot Chili Peppers - I love their quirky music, it's catchy.

Enigma - Gotta love the soothing music, just zone out to it.

Yanni - Classics, period.

Rammstein - I love their songs. They have a great beat and awesome music.

The Killers - I loved them before they got huge. Unique sound, great songs.

Nicklback - Great messages in their songs, I love their music.

Cake - Unique once again, fabulous covers of the oldies.

The Cranberries - I'm a sucker for an accent, I love this group too.

L'Oiseau Noir 10-02-2007 01:38 PM

I love Yanni, too, Maverick! =D

Hmm, I like the following artists/bands:

-Enya

-Aqua

-The Dresden Dolls

-Yanni

-Kitaro

-Amethystium

-Tchaikovsky

-Mozart

-Beethoven

-Sarah Brightman

-Killswitch Engage

-Rob Zombie (Haha, yes, I like good ol' Rob).

-Creature Feature

-Adastreia

-Aesma Daeva

-Sonata Arctica

-Kamelot

-Epica

-Visions of Atlantis

-Haggard

-Sirenia

-E Nomine

-Tristania

-Lunatica

-Rasputina

-In Flames (Very little, however).

There's a bunch more I like to jam to, but the list would go on and on if I sat here and typed them all up. But, there's a few I listen to whenever I'm in the mood.

KontanKarite 10-02-2007 01:41 PM

A bit of Deadsy, more their first album than their second.

Garbage is cool

FRESH OUT OF DEATH!! Fucking interesting.

Oh and Orgy. Also New Order.

Cyntrox 10-02-2007 01:45 PM

There's been this thread before, I'm quite sure.

For myself: Lots. Evanescence. Nightwish. Within Temptation. Sirenia. Epica. Notice a trend? Oh yeah, I love symphonic/"gothic" metal. There's more too, but I don't feel like listing it.

And shame on me, I forgot to mention Nightwish and Within Temptation, too.

Wow, I have a very slippery mind.

MaguMan 10-02-2007 03:12 PM

A better (i.e. smaller) list is what I don't listen to, but for the sake of keeping things interesting, I'll try to cover the bases in terms of parent genres:

~Top 40 hits (pick your decade in history)
~Country
~World Music (Mostly Russian, Indian, and Middle Eastern - including Rai)
~Classical
~Industrial
~Metal
~Punk
~Rap
~Hip-hop
~Reggae
~Alternative
~Eclectic
~Experimental/Dark Ambient/Noise
~Jazz
~Blues
~Electronic
~Folk
~New Age

...and that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

NachtSorcier 10-02-2007 03:16 PM

Not a whole lot really, I'm rather picky, but there are a few:

- Duran Duran

- The B-52's

- The Psychedelic Furs

- Aerosmith

- The Bangles

- Toto

- Bananarama

- Ace of Base

††BlackRose†† 10-02-2007 05:04 PM

One of my favourite non-goth band is Muse. I love them!!! I've loved them ever since the first time I heard of them which was in like 1999 or something. Wow that's a long time. hehe.

Graveyard.Crow 10-02-2007 05:28 PM

Plenty of none gothic bands, however all my favorite bands are morbid or somehow in the Gothic direction (Victoria, gothic horror)

Theatres des vampires
garbage
orgy
Soundtracks from movies that I love
A few songs by Katy Rose
Kidney Thieves.

Does liking none goth bands REALLY deserve a whole other thread.

MaverickZero 10-02-2007 05:42 PM

Yes, it does. Cause personally I'm sick of seeing the "Goth Top 40" list in every frigging thread. It's nice to see people have individual tastes,

Cicero 10-02-2007 09:25 PM

This thread has actually been done many times before (albeit not as many times as the 'top goth bands' threads), but nevermind... I feel like listing the bands that I like:

- Placebo
- Hole
- The Distillers
- Type O Negative
- Red Hot Chili Peppers
- Simple Minds
- Fleetwood Mac
- Split Enz
- Oingo Boingo
- Adam and the Ants
- Madonna
- Eurythmics
- Blondie
- Colour of Fire
- The Dandy Warhols
- Paralisis Permanente
- Patti Smith
- Amebix
- Aus Rotten
- Anti-flag
- Almost anything from the Gatecrasher and Ministry of Sound compilations, I especially love DJ Tiesto
- Silverchair
- AFI
- At the Drive-In
- A Perfect Circle
- Tool
- David Bowie

Plus a whole lot more.

No I don't mean it like that.
I mean, is it really THAT bad to like something other than goth that it can't go with all the other favorite band threads. It's like anything none goth is cast out or something...

Yes I forgot the distillers too.
Too bad they broke up...

Corpsey 10-03-2007 02:23 AM

My utter favourites are:

A Perfect Circle & Tool (Great nod of approval to Cicero)
Die Toten Hosen

Dead Kennedys

Salmonella Dub (New Zealand electronica... ludicrously relaxing)

Gorillaz

Opeth

Disillusion

Incubus

Rage Against the Machine

Pink Floyd

Blonde Redhead

Rammstein

The Smashing Pumpkins

The Traveling Wilburys

Quite possibly Puscifer might be added to this list, once I hear more than just two songs from Maynard's new band. Everything else I listen to is classics such as Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and Led Zeppelin.

I like the Gorillaz as well, Opeth, and Rage Against the Machine. I always listen to one of their tunes at least once a day. Yaay, go me.

Necropolis 10-03-2007 02:23 PM

Teargarden

Legendary Pink Dots

Skinny Puppy

Coil

Throbbing Gristle

Neubauten

VNV Nation

Overlords

a few Project Pitchfork and Velvet Acid Christ songs (but I've gotten WAY away from that EBM sound, so it's just that residual "I was into them years ago" type-feeling. Same goes for: Wumpscut, Snog,
Leaether Strip, Frontline Assembly, X-marks the Pedwalk, etc.)

Delerium, Lycia, Neptune Towers

Peccatum

Mortiis

Dargaard

Stratovarius, Falkenbach, Haggard, Limbonic Art, Emperor, Bloodthorn, Phantom, Wolf, Stormwitch, Medieval Steel, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Masque, Summoning, Arcturus, Thorns, Dark Throne...

This could go on forever. Bottomline is: I like dark music -- All metal (except I'm not real big on any death metal), industrial, and goth.

Huge Skinny Puppy fan.

electrosexual 10-03-2007 07:42 PM

I just listen to trance and other forms of dance music. Anything from hardcore terrorcore to whispy Paris runway trance.

I relate more to the goth aesthetic and way of thinking.

Yayz! I was hoping someone else would like Gorillaz! If you like Gorillaz, you should definately listen to Salmonella Dub. It's the kiwi version of them really and they're very relaxing. If you just want a taster, their best songs to try (for me) are Problems, Push on Thru and Nu Steppa.

Opeth just kicks arse and I listen to them a lot even if it's just for musical appreciation.

Rage against the Machine are coming to New Zealand this January!!!!!!
Definately a concert for me to look forward to. :D

Lucky... I wanna go. =(

And I'll definitely check out Salmonella Dub.

~Angel_Of_Darkness~ 11-18-2007 07:59 PM

Hm, other than goth? Punk, Alternative and Death Metal...

Godslayer Jillian 11-18-2007 09:06 PM

Green Day is not punk.

Paigeybobert 11-18-2007 09:13 PM

My second favorite type of music is rap/hip-hop. hahaha.
I enjoy 50 Cent, Justin Timberlake, The Game, etc.
I also enjoy '80s stuff like the Talking Heads and all of that.

Yer alright in my book Corpsey :)

Clockwork 11-19-2007 05:32 PM

'Guess I have a few.

- Streetlight Manifesto
- Reel Big Fish
- the Cherry Poppin' Daddies
- Oingo Boingo
- Dr. Steel
- Abney Park
- Velvet Acid Christ
- Avenged Sevenfold

I'm really picky and dislike almost all music I hear, hence the short list.

Miss Cogs 11-19-2007 07:23 PM

To name a few;

~ The Smashing Pumkins
~Abney Park
~Reel Big Fish
~Dr. Steel
~Cherry Poppin' Daddies
~Classical music
~Oingo Boingo
~Velvet Acid Christ
~David Bowie
~Orgy

A Simple Poet 11-22-2007 07:26 AM

Does anyone enjoy the lyrical and diverse talents of Tom Waits?

PinstripesAndPithHelmets 11-22-2007 08:25 AM

Tom Waits is a genius. His older, bluesy stuff is good, but I prefer his more modern experimental madness.

I was going to go see Wristcutters because Waits is in it, but it was only in the local independent theater for a week. I missed it by one day.

PinstripesAndPithHelmets 11-22-2007 08:31 AM

I just noticed your location, Poet. Is your best friend a railroad track, too?

Ruhiel 12-11-2007 08:09 PM

Mostly alternative.

Smashing Pumpkins
Sting
AFI
30 Seconds to Mars
Green Day (notoriously catchy damnit!)
Rage Against the Machine
Gorillaz (love zany cartoon music stars)
A Perfect Circle
Coheed & Cambria
Dir en grey
Ministry
Motorhead
Muse
Placebo
t.A.T.u.
The Strokes
Seal

Murxek 12-18-2007 09:30 PM

Besides Goth, Deathrock, Aggrotech, Industrial, Darkwave, Ethereal, Visual Kei

I also have my b-sides which are mostly international:

Nek
Placebo
David Bowie
The Killers
Fobia
Boy Hits Car
Christina Aguilera
Belinda
Enrique Iglesias
Pink Floyd
Mogwai
Justin Timberlake
Bjork
Timbaland
And i really like Lifehouse and Blake Lewis when they sing "Somewhere Only We KNow"

magickaykay 12-22-2007 08:28 AM

Some of my favorite artist/bands-
-Aiden
-HIM
-Senses Fail
-Endwell
-Freezepop
-Pop Criminal
-Munroe
-A Billion Ernies
-Saosin
-T.A.T.U
-Jeffree Star
-Rise Against
-Hawthorne Heights
-T-Pain
-Antic Cafe
-Muse
-Gazette
-Imogen Heap/Frou Frou
That's all I could really think of on the spot.

spoon! 12-22-2007 09:30 AM

Varied, as I feel I'm not really bound to any one musical style.

I can listen to Punk, Deathrock, Goth, Metal, Classic Rock, 50s/60s Pop, Folk, Alternative, and JRock/JPop one week and then switch entirely to Jazz, Swing, Classical, Big Band, and Choral

crimsonjoy 12-22-2007 10:01 AM

I love all types of music, really, as long as it's loud, angry, aggressive, and/or passionate; from the heart.

lostintranslation 12-27-2007 03:32 PM

I listen to a million non-goth bands, here's just a few:

Modest Mouse
Sufjan Stevens
Nickel Creek
The Shins
Air
Anberlin
Be Your Own Pet
The White Stripes
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Vertical Horizon
Zwan
The Scissor Sisters
10 Years
3
The Blood Brothers
Brandston
Framing Hanley
Ra
Caroline's Spine
Cowboy Mouth
Coheed and Cambria
Death Cab For Cutie
The Decemberists
Dredg
The Dresden Dolls
Katy Perry

The list gets longer by the day, those are just a few, and I mean a few.

IsolatedReptile 12-27-2007 10:21 PM

I have to agree on the Tom Waits. The man is a musical genius and his voice is absolutely stunning.

I also enjoy the blues-rock of White Stripes. Not to fond of her, but he amazes me musically. Lyrically he's still fun, but not as good as his playing.

Lately, Miles Davis and John Coltrane have been getting some rotation as well. I've found that jazz is fairly relaxing.

ZyklonB 12-27-2007 10:38 PM

I prefer Tom Jones over Tom Waits, but that's just me :D

It's Not Unusual... oh how I love that song. And let's not forget What's New Pussycat!

Opteron_Man 12-28-2007 10:31 AM

NOT Goth? Well how about these?

The Police
The Doors
Rod Stewart
The Beatles
Kansas

badteccy 12-28-2007 11:50 AM

Not goth ( a shit ton):
Beck, Beirut, Animal Collective, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, DJ Diplo, Venetian Snares, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, You Say Party! We Say Die!, M.I.A., Lower Class Brats, The Casualties,Peter and the Test Tube Babies....ugh, so much
To be honest, I don't listen to much goth or even dress goth that much anymore.

Dark Clarissa 12-28-2007 12:10 PM

I'm so glad that I'm not the only person here who has eclectic tastes :-D

There's been a lot of good stuff already mentioned here...hmmm...where to start...

Here goes...in no particular order:

David Bowie
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Alison Moyet
Eurythmics
Duran Duran
Yngwie Malmsteen
Extreme (apparently they're in the process of recording another album to be released next year - so I hear)
Muse
Linkin Park
Limp Bizkit
The Killers
Radiohead
Jimi Hendrix
Mozart
Liszt
Albinoni
Hydyn
Tatu (can't be bothered to ever work out how the capitals should go lol)
Godsmack
Lostprophets (some of their stuff)
Megadeth
Beethoven
Metallica (but only really the black album)
My Chemical Romance (are they considered Emo? I'm too old to know lol)
Nirvana
Stonesour
Trivium

I'm 100% certain that there are dozens of others that I can't think of off the top of my head.

badteccy 12-28-2007 12:38 PM

Lol, Limp Bizkit.

David Bowie counts as Goth. C'mon, Ziggy Stardust? That is single handedly the most goth track ever.

Next to Hit Me Baby One More Time of course.
