Hot Topic and Sisters of Mercy? Ohhh baby!
I never thought this day would come..
I was in Hot Topic, looking for any hidden Siouxsie shirts or Bauhaus buttons (I have one of each.. Hot Topic OCCASIONALLY hides small amounts of Gothness in the corner).. I was just about to leave.. and..... This Corrosion starts playing. In Hot Topic. I almost jumped for joy/pissed myself/fainted. I even called Justin at work just to tell him. I walked around the store, singing along. I walked out as soon as I made sure the next song wasn't Bauhaus :p Okay, so maybe I am overreacting. But.. Sisters of Mercy! In HOT TOPIC! This might just be the happiest day of my life. |
Not suprising, the Hot Topic near me usually plays some good stuff...usually...
|
Here, all I have EVER heard them play is pop punk, emo, and realllllly bad "metal".. it was quite a surprise to hear Sisters.
|
Hot Topic is playing good music? Srsly???
|
The employees of Hot Topic are the ones that get to choose the music played in the place.
If you have cool people working in Hot Topic, you get cool music. A friend of mine also heard This Corrosion and said it out loud, a girl that worked in the shop couldn't believe someone in Hot Topic knew The Sisters of Mercy (even the workers are elitist about their customers! that one store gets points with me :)) and now my friend wants me to meet her. |
Yeah, my HTs usually play goth music like 50% of the time.
|
No Hot Topic I've been too has ever played anything of the sort, if I can remember well enough. But I do remember, my friend found a rather tight fitting Siousixe and the Banshee's shirt for himself. Looks rather good on him.
|
There's like five people in here, myself included, that have found that same shirt and admitted that Hot Topic occasionally has something good, just as any other store.
|
Sorry, after seeing "grills" for sale in Cinci, I pretty much made it a principal to not shop there ever again.

my snot topic usually plays horrible pop punk too. Like, not even good legit punk. It's usually some shitty band covering an old song horribly. Once I heard a HORRID cover of an old Bobby Darin song. Oh! And lots of Emo crap.
|
All the employees are emo or pop punk rockers.. there is a big "scene kid" crowd here, too.
That's really why I was so surprised.. I NEVER thought I would hear anything I liked in there. |
Hey...I love scene. LOVE it.
|
Scene kids around here just annoy me.. they are SO incredibly immature.
|
Hot Topic sometimes plays good stuff. Every once in a while I'll go in there to browse and see if there is anything worth buying, and I'll hear a good song playing so I stick around and listen to it. I used to like Hot Topic, but a lot of stuff about it changed.
Scene kids and preppy kids are the majority where I live, but I try not to let them bother me too much. The scene kids aren't that bad, I guess. |

Once, I was in hot topic and they were playing Rocky Horror Picture Show songs! I was so happy! I time warped right in the middle of that there store.

I went to Hot Topic once a few years ago before I had to go into work, I bought a CD, and the guy that was working there asked me if I wanted to go to The Sisters of Mercy concert with him that was that night... I was pretty sad as I HAD to work that night.

Just to add my two cents; there are a few neat people at the Hot Topic that I live near. One employee plays a lot of old Death rock. Last time I went in there I heard Virgin Prunes, and Eva O.
I found out that the person who put all of that on was a chick with a huge death hawk, go figure. |

I suppose that means I'm not going to go "scene" any time soon. I prefer darker colors, myself. And there is no WAY I'm going to splash bright paint on my leather jacket. Maybe I'll just make my OWN subculture.... |
Hot Topic... ugh, once a place I used to buy "gothic" clothes in bulk... I don't live near one, closest one would be in Salt Lake City.

Coffee, discontent, American Spirit cigarettes and Urban Outfitters. God I love indie music, and indie guys. |

We don't have Hot Topics down this way... i think... we do have something very similar though; we calls it: Dangerfield... are Dangerfields up there in America and the like? or is it a case of Dangerfield being the Australian Hot Topic?
On that note; do you have Off Ya Tree up there? |

We have "Real Groovy" in New Zealand, which isn't the most appealing shop in the world to me. I'll stick to good old Mango Music or Old Boat, thanks. I got some seriously good bargains at both, including The Cure Pornography for like 15 bucks NZ (10 US... maybe 12).

I heard Dethklok at the one here once.
Being something of an Adult Swim nerd, I rather enjoyed it. XD |
Hot Topic + Sisters of Mercy = <3
*laughs* I bet most of the people there didn't even know the song. |

Hot Topic Blows, its so fucking unoriginal, it turned any form of Goth culture into a McDonalds drive thru. But I have met cool people there while buying crap like socks or buttons but fuck it still blows. Once I heard Love and the Rockets in Hot Topic. I was highly amused. |

Do May Say Think = Epoch |
Goth and Punk as a look is stupid now. The only reason why either one was good is because the early scenes were full or artistical types who made their own clothes, or went to Vintage shops and modified their clothes, or were in a band and rich enough to have Fashion Designers make their clothes. The best band T-Shirts i have seen lately are ones my friends' print on their silkscreens at work, and not even official shirts. Hot Topics just caters to the unimaginative types who somehow found their ways into the punk and goth scenes.

Problem solved. |

i don't shop there. i laugh at the cookie-cutter fools who do shop there, who think they're actually part of any subcultural scene.

You're right; in order to assure our absolute Gothicity, no real Goth should ever EVER step foot in Hot Topic! Upon doing so, they must have their Goth membership revoked immediately!! :O [<-- Note sarcastic tone] It's a store. No more, no less. It doesn't take away a piece of your black vinyl-clad soul to step foot in one. Besides, if they have some cool band shirts, what's wrong with shopping there? |

And what exactly are the rules of being a part of a particular subculture? |
Look at the hoards of idiot Mansonite kids from the late 90s onward, who call themselves goth, Hot Topic Scooby Doo goth is lame, it has nothing to do with the Bauhaus/Peter Murphy's reasoning for founding Goth which was; basically instead of being Destructive like Punk, Goth was meant to be a creative Force. There's nothing creative about going into Hot Topics and buying into a look.

It -is- true that kids who are just in it for the spookiness of it can be irritating, but at the same time you have to keep in mind that the very word 'Goth' was something first applied by our illustrious media; the fans of the music weren't the ones who started it in the beginning. Peter Murphey didn't 'found Goth' per se; he just did his own thing, and it ended up being a starting point for Goth. Truth is, the music considered Goth from back then evolved from post-punk. Strange, I know, but true. As for Masonite kids, I honestly don't know any, though it seems to be a major irritation of several net.goths. I've never been a huge fan of Mason myself, but meh; he's made a hella lot of money by doing his own thing [sort of], so I can't really see anything bad about him personally. Creative forces have the very real problem of only being original for a short time; if they are successful, everyone and their mom wants to copy it; if they aren't, then they are forgotten about fast. But, such is the way of the world.. |

SOM= Epoch Hot Topic= Fucking lame... Sorry Im with Zavulon. Hot Topic is mainstream. No questions about that. ITS IN EVERY FUCKING MALL! Come on Buy some black pants and put cute shirts together that you make. Thrift Shops, vintage... Expression not mass production, thats why it is mainstream. |
Hey dairies are mainstream better not go in them...
|
The grocery store is also mainstream. So are most restaurants, and traveling to different countries, and speaking English, and so on and so forth.
You're entitled to not like Hot Topic and be Goth, and I'm entitled to go into it on occasion and still retain my love of the music and my own individual style. :) If it's a sin to say that I like some of the things they have, then I admit; I'm a most horrid sinner! [I bought a Jack Skellington scarf, hat, and glove set on sale there that absolutely saved my life on a -very- cold day! ] |
