I know a few guys that are furries. One guy never shuts up about it and freakin annoys me. He proves almost every furry stereotype true. My other friend though is pretty cool.

yes, and there are already a couple of older furry threads around here somewhere. except for those who are furries of one sort or another, I doubt you'll find much knowledge or acceptance of it. james, most people who have heard of furries have just heard of certain sexual aspects from the minority. most people think of furries as people who dress up in suits for screwing. They don't understand fursuiting, or that it doesn't have to be a sexual thing, or that most times it isn't, or even that the great majority of furries aren't fursuiters. Kinda like people automatically assume goths are into heavy bondage :/, except with furries people think that is the main focus. they don't know about anthropomorphic art, or the spirituality some associate with it, or that it is a way for some people to be more comfortable in their own skin.

im new to culture but i'll give it a go.
for some of us its a way to escape, for others a way to meet interesting people, for some its entertainment, for others unfortanitly it is about sex, some of us just like to cuddle with total strangers in suits. thats as best i can put it, if you want try wikipedia or a furry web site.

I'm not a furry myself, but I'm familiar with the culture.

I don't really have an opinion on them save for the fact that they strike me as almost the same mentality as those in the goth culture that thinks it's all divine or special in some way.

I get furries/otherkin/therians/people with totem animals/whatever who feel a connection with a type of animal and I understand why some of them enjoy wearing a physical representation of that animal (ears/tales/what-have-you), I just don't get the people who have a fetish for that kind of stuff

I just don't get it for the same reason I don't get any attempt to materialize, humanize, and objectify spirituality.
Basically I put furries in the same level as religious people. And if anyone find that offensive, it just means they're thinking with pre-conceived notions of either of these two people. If you think critically about it a little, you'll see why I see them as equals.

Some people need to believe in something. Let them.

I do believe in a lot of inexistent things based not on what is but on what ought to be.
I believe in the metaphysics of quality.
I believe in the inherent goodness of humankind.
I believe that the two concepts of Liberty and Equality balance each other when arbitrated by Fraternity.
I believe evolution is increasing exponentially.
I believe as soon as this system is overthrown, with the current globalization of information, oppression will finally become obsolete.

Yet these beliefs are (in the very least) more than half based on decent evidence, and conjectured by the reasoning my experience as a human being has accrued.
I don't see how personal animal totems and paternal spiritual crutches can be based on evidence more than on personal preference and defense mechanisms.

I actually have an irrational hatred for furries.
