Earth Hour
Has anyone heard about "Earth Hour"? Tonight at 8pm (local time for everyone) many cities across the world are going to be turning all lights and electrical equipment for one hour to promote conservation of electrical sources and what not.
Will you be participating in it and what are your opinions on it? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Hour |

I will more than likely be doing something for it. I think it is yet one more of those things that could be helpful, but voluntary things like this never get too much accomplished. People get worked up to them, think it is cool for that one day, then the next forget to turn off a couple lights in the house when they go to work, and let them burn all day. Or they leave the t.v. on all night, etc. People usually just go back into their old behaviors, which kind of negates the positives of the Earth Hour philosophy.

I won't be doing it, I don't use lights unless I'm in the room anyway. Well most of the time at least. Johnny Gnar Gnar is right, for most people it will only happen this one time.
I don't really think people are ever going to change their energy use habits, better to change the way energy is produced. |

I do think that it is cool to see the Opera House blacked out. I'm not sure how well that link will work, it kinda gave me a bit of trouble. |
I'm going to buy some searchlights. I figure, with everyone's lights off, I'll be able to do some really cool things with those beams. :-D

Haha yea I noticed google has gone black. My bf blamed me for it, said "did I change the settings on the computer"
I wonder if the world actually turns their lights of for this? |
GOOGLE OF DOOM! he he he.
This reminds me... Picture it, Sicily, 1923... I remember a few years back when gas was at a TOTALLY UNREASONABLE $1.99 A GALLON! So a majority of the people refused to buy gas on a predetermined date. The idea behind it was if enough people didn't buy gas then the price would go down, or some shit like that. Date came and went. People refused to buy gas. Now gas is at $3.57 a gallon, so clearly it worked. |

Heard of it and liek the idea, the only negative factor i see is that not everyone is too aware of it, ya know? It would be more effective if it was more widespread. But usually the only people that know are th eones already actively involved- needs to be more outreach to people who don't normally work in these areas.
But yeah, definately my block is in. |
I didn't even know about this until just now, so no, I won't be participating. Also to add, I don't very much care for this idea either. While it has great intentions, the actual practicality of it seems a bit small. I mean, if everyone were to participate, it may show concern however the actual energy saved in one hour? Would that really add up to all that much in the long run?
|
It actually can be a significant amount of energy, but I think it's more to raise awareness.
I myself participated, and spent a rather peaceful hour bathed in the soft meditative light of candles. I actually enjoyed it. |

OOh! It's almost 8! (7:53) I forgot! Until..right now. *shrugs* I have a cake in the oven, so...Yeah. Does this mean I hate the Earth? Eh. Fuck this planet anyhow. I'm all about Mars.

I didn’t do it because I converted most of my lighting to compact florescent bulbs. That's my contribution to the cause.

If you guys care so much about the earth, why aren't you doing this every night?
|
I was at a concert, so all the lights in my house were off around then anyway. Hope it helped a bit.
|
I think it would be more effective if everyone did small things all year. Instead of something drastic like cutting power once every year.
But that's just me. |
And that so totally misses the point.
