in memory of goth girl sophie lancaster
Music for S.O.P.H.I.E
By dprsmith on April 22nd, 2008 SophieA touching event coming up in support of the S.O.P.H.I.E campaign will be the Gods Of Ink charity “Goth” day in memory of Sophie Lancaster. This will be held at the Gods Of Ink Tattoo studio in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport on May 17. The organisers said that it will be a day to remember: “Piercing and tattoos played a big part in Sophie’s life which is why we are holding a charity ‘Goth’ day at our tattoo and piercing studio in Cheadle Hulme.” The event will begin from 12 noon until 10pm and will feature an acoustic set from Dear Superstar and there will of course be plenty of opportunities to “get inked.” In fact it is heavily encouraged, Gods Of Ink added: “We are going to donate £5 from every tattoo and £2 from every piercing that is done on the day to the S.O.P.H.I.E fund, we will give discounts to anyone who comes that are wearing the charity wristbands, these will be available shortly from the studio and also on the day, the are £1 each and all proceeds will go to the S.O.P.H.I.E fund.” Ten punk and metal bands played at a concert in late 2007 for the first memorial gig in honour of Sophie, the girl who was attacked and beaten to death in August of the same year and this has inspired a whole host of tributes. The November event was a homage to Sophie, who would have been 21 this year, she died two weeks after suffering serious injuries in Stubbylee Park, Bacup, along with boyfriend Robert Maltby who is still alive and can recall nothing of the incident. Money raised from this and other events that have been organised will go to the S.O.P.H.I.E (Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere) campaign which has been launched by friends and family of the former student. Police have said they believed Sophie and Robert may have been targeted because they were wearing alternative or Gothic clothing.More gigs in Sophie’s honour have been organised this year, with charity events spanning the country. In Whitby, there will be a memorial bench dedication at the town’s Gothic Weekend on April 25th in North Yorkshire. Sophie and her boyfriend had enjoyed attending the festival. Alongside the music at the Goth day in May, there will also be a charity raffle. The organisers are currently taking advance bookings for tattoos and piercing on the day.For more information call Lisa on 0751 4601423 |

i heard about this a while back. i used to get beat up in school all the time.for everyone out there who knows the pain of not being accepted, i understand.
|
This is a sad thing but i must say why is the media only just reporting these kinds of incidents it is not like this is a new thing and the way the media portrayed this they are making out as if it is .
I am 21 now and i have been put in hospital with Saviour injuries in the past including burns from when my arm was set on fire to me the media only concentrates on a story such as this when somebody dies they do not cover or care about "goths" or whomever around the country being seriously hurt because of these kind of people it is fucking ridiculous. Sorry i am ranting i have a habit of doing this. |
I am curious about the possibility that someone might try to capitialize on this tragic event. Who knows right?
|
What do you think the media does, Opteron_Man? They're out to make money, and only publish/broadcast stories they think will make money.
|
This made me want to puke.
I can't believe that someone would do something like that. It's almost as bad as a mate of mine who got beaten to death because she loved Lordi. It wasn't covered. |

Thank you Google:
http://www.lordi.fi/ I assume that is the "Lordi" you speak of, LillithDuskcutter? Sorry to hear about your friend. That is a stupid thing to kill over... I wish people would recognize what things really aren't their business. |

A friend of mine was killed two years ago simply because she liked the band Lordi. It wasn't covered in the news. |
If Sophie wasn't a "goth girl" (but was murdered for another reason), would this charity event still be held?
|
Not by goths.
|
Mm....I doubt even by non-goths. She would be just another dead girl. It seems to be that the only reason this, very tragic, story is getting so much attention is because she was totally goth.
Not to say it isn't a nice thing, and it is very sad for the girl and her family and friends, but...I dunno...I'll stop before I sound more worse of a person. |

If she was: Punk, Skater, "Emo", black, listened to heavy metal, wasn't a christian and maybe somethign else like a wiccan or a witch. Ugh. AOL is being a bitch. I gotta go. |
Oh my fucking goth!!!
Did you just fucking mentioned minority persecution and went on to only list white middle class subcultures?!!! |
P.S. I see she mentioned 'black, listened to heavy metal...' which I originally read as 'black metal', so great; she had the decency of mentioning one legitimate persecuted minority. What is so ironic is that in this world a black guy really wouldn't get this much attention. I mean, seriously, I think I have heard more shock out of this girl than Malcolm X who is only mentioned as "oh yeah and he was shot too".
Her post still infuriates me. She really puts metalheads and skaters in the same level of oppression as blacks, and doesn't even bother to mention native americans and illegal immigrants! |
