microbes made the earth's crust and they can make gold, too.

not sure if this is "spooky" per se, but it's freakin amazing and gave me the chills (good chills).
recently, scientists have figured out that instead of chemical and physics-related phenomena creating the earth's surface, much of it was formed thanks to microbes. in fact, there is actually a field of science called geomicrobiology that studies just that. oh, they can also make gold, clean water supplies, help us find life on mars, live in volcanoes at 250 degrees farenheit, as well as 2.6 miles under the earth's surface, and stop global warming.
i shit you not.

click here to see how fucking amazing these little suckers really are. its a long article, but if you're interested in science, it's well worth it.

You realize it's an article from 1996 right? Not exactly recent, but yes, bacteria are cool. ;)

dre bin laden 07-31-2008 05:21 PM

WOA! I FEEL LIKE A DICK! how has this glorious information been common knowledge for all these years and i am just discovering it now?

hahaaa that's the funniest thing ever. regardless, bacteria shaped the earth and they are my best friends and one day i will study those little buggers all day.

Godslayer Jillian 07-31-2008 05:39 PM

Wow. I didn't know this either. I had the idea that only a supernova could create atoms that heavy.

Raptor 07-31-2008 06:09 PM

They're forming deposits from exsisting material, not creating atoms themselves. You are right that heavier elements are created in supernovae.

dre bin laden 07-31-2008 06:11 PM

lol ok so they don't actually create the atoms, they just have the ability to catalyze the concentration of them in a natural envoronment to help form minerals, metals, and gases as we see them on the earth's crust. i reconsider my word choice because i sense sarcasm in your tone. forgive me if i have assumed your connotations erroneously, but you're right. i shouldn't have written "make", i should have written "form". they're still awesome little shits though, right?

Raptor 07-31-2008 06:19 PM

No sarcasm. I was following on from what Jillian said.

And yes, still awesome :)

dre bin laden 07-31-2008 07:20 PM

hah wooaaa you seem to have left that first post during the time it took me to reply to jillian's post. weeird.
but yeah you guys are completely right.

Gawd 07-31-2008 10:16 PM

I think I've briefly learned about this, but it's a nice re-discovery.
