Which covers do you think either match or surpass the original in awesomeness?

Devo's version of Satisfaction
Creedance's version of Midnight Special
The Pogues' versions of The Wild Rover and Gentleman Soldier

These are the ones that immediately spring to mind for me.

Jimi Hendrix - All along the Watch Tower.

I think I prefer the Bauhaus cover of Ziggy Stardust to the Bowie version, but that may just be because I heard theirs first. :P [I didn't even realize it was a Bowie song until a week or so ago.]

Nick Caves version of Mack the Knife
Sisters of Mercy - Gimme Shelter

I prefer Bat For Lashes version of 'A Forest' a little more than I do, The Cure's. I also really like Siouxsie and the Banshee's cover of 'This Wheel's On Fire'.

Can't seem to think of many more.

I like Deadsy's covers of Paint it Black and Tom Sawyer better than the originals, but I did hear them first.

That's a good Sisters cover, but I don't think Eldritch's voice quite fits the song..... Oh well, maybe I'm just too much of a Dylan fan.

I like this one personally, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's better than the original version:

A band called the Agony Scene did Paint it Black quite well in my opinion. If you could call them covers, I love the Across the Universe versions of all the Beatles songs they used. Also, I love Marilyn Manson's covers of songs, except Personal Jesus but that's a boring song either way so it wasn't his fault. Also, every single cover I've ever heard of "Ever Fallen in Love" by the Buzzcocks is amazing. Anti-Flag did it well, and so did Thursday.

In Strict Confidence's covers of Stripped and The Sun Always Shines On TV, by Depeche Mode and A-ha respectively.

Dear Prudence as covered by Siouxsie and the Banshees. I'm a Beatles fan but I thought she sounded so charming :D

I feel that Garden of Dreams' cover of The Cure's "To the Sky" surpasses the original in that it captures the dreaminess better.

I also feel that the Android Lust cover of Bauhaus' "Slice of Life" and The Dresden Dolls' cover of The Psychedelic Furs' "Pretty in Pink" are comparable in greatness to the originals.

Ahh I can't stand that version. The original I love, but Android Lust just didn't do it for me.

I'm kind of surprised no one took to mentioning the Killers cover of Shadowplay. I don't think it's better than the original, but I certainly enjoy it as much.

The Passenger done by Siouxsie and the Banshees, I like it better than then by Iggy Pop.

I also saw the Dresden Dolls do War Pigs Live, it was interesting and actually worked pretty well for there being no guitars.

Oh, that's an awesome one. Damn slippy mind.

I will probably be flamed for this, but I actually think KORN's cover of "The Wall" is better than Floyd's original. Although, part of that is because the source tape for Floyd's original is so old, it often does not sound right. It's not "clean" for lack of a better word.

Well One did mention the bad quality.
That I can agree with on somethings.
Some time's I'll like a cover better, because I can't musically comprehend the original due to lack of technology then.
But my ears are probably just used to that computerized sound.

What?

By no means are they my favorite band (right now I seem to spend more time listening to Acid Tongue, The Last Dance, Dream Side, Disturbed, Otep, and 69 Eyes, etc.), but I think an arguement can be made they have certainly influenced the music scene.

Plus, the source tape issue...see above.

Finally, I also believe it is important to support local music and Korn originated not far from where I grew up. And overall, they have some decent tracks.

Floyd..well there Pink Floyd..classic, no denying the influence, and overall some great music...but they are amongst the class who started some thing and moved rock/music in a different direction...but they are not the end.

The end is not written yet. Music will continue to change an evolve.
