The Strong One Alone is Right!
Setting an example is not the main means of influencing another, it is the only means. At a time when only deeds count and words are of little importance, I can stand before you all with the blatent truism that my example has more followers than your failed reason. I find it interesting that the old order of tired members has began to complain of the conduct of the young members when they themselves are no longer able to set a bad example. It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.
All serious daring starts from within. Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties. Moral cowardice that keeps us from speaking our minds is as dangerous to this forum as irresponsible talk. The right way is not always the popular and easy way. Standing for right when it is unpopular is a true test of moral character. I represent that moral character. When a resolute young fellow steps up to the great bully, and takes him boldly by the beard, he is often surprised to find it comes off in his hand, and that it was only tied on to scare away the timid adventurers. It is not our critics who count, not the users who points out how we may have stumbled, or how we, the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to us who actually are in the arena, whose faces are marred by dust and sweat and blood, we who strive valiantly, we who err and come short again and again, we who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, we who devote ourselves to a worthy cause, we who at best know achievement and who at the worst know if we fail at least fail while daring greatly so that our place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat. Every revolutionary ends up either by becoming an oppressor or a heretic. To quote George Orwell: "In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." |
Unfortunately I have no witty or intellectual comments to tack on here. What I can say however is that I agree with your statement entirely, and that your post was an inspiring one.

It's been 24 hours.
Put up or shut up. Anyway...does anyone here know anything about keeping rats as pets? I've been at it for a while, but one of the rats I have now has the peculiar habit of hurling itself into the roof of its cage. She gets exercise, she's well fed, has water, and has a littermate for a friend in the cage. |
