The game isn't based off the movies, the game is based off of the extended universe which is not covered by the star wars movies. The old republic takes place a thousand years before the movies.

I hope you don't make a foolish move and call KOTOR a crappy game.

Star Wars is not an extended universe. It's a movie. Everything based around it is based off of a movie and KOTOR is a crappy game.
