Watchmen Movie and your gripes

After seeing more reassuring trailors about the story, I've only really came to one gripe. Rorschach's personality doesn't match him at all.

When I read the book, he struck me as a man who spoke very even and monotone and sounded very much like his journal as if he were just listing things off. His speech didn't flow that well at all.

But in the movie, he's got a graveled voice with complete sentence structures.

That's really my only gripe. Other than that, it should be an amazing movie.

Godslayer Jillian 01-26-2009 05:15 PM

Not at all. Turns out Owlman kills Ozymandias. Because Hollywood spectators love clearly defined bad guys that lose.
Amoral nihilism would give them a headache.

KontanKarite 01-26-2009 05:20 PM

Well MOTHER FUCKER!!!! That ruins the whole god damned thing.

Godslayer Jillian 01-26-2009 05:27 PM

It really does.

ThreeEyesOni 01-26-2009 05:54 PM

*sighs* I'm depressed that they figured that one of comic's best stories wasn't fit for media consumption in it's original form. The tweaks they are making are (for the most part) small on the surface, but they completely change the point of the story.

It'll be a good watch, but I'm probably going to feel like murdering someone by the end of it.

Draconysius 02-04-2009 08:24 AM

I still haven't read past issue one of the comic yet. Been hung up on Preacher.

If that's true, thanks for ruining it.

"Amoral nihilism?" Please explain, because I was under the impression that what Ozymandias did was utilitarian.

exacerbatedpoet 02-04-2009 11:21 PM

Jillian what's your source? How do you know Owlman kills Ozymandias?

Godslayer Jillian 02-05-2009 12:22 AM

I forget where I found it, but I read the third script online. I'll try to find it again. There's the chance they wrote more than three scripts, but due to the date of the last one being close to production date, I think that was the last script, and in that one, Owlman kills Ozymandias in self defense.

And yeah, sorry for giving out the huge spoiler; here's another one:
Instead of a psychic alien, the weapon is a kind of laser.
Let's hope they followed another script after all.

As for the amoral nihilism, I'm not talking about Ozymandias himself, but about the story. In the comic, there's no actual point to anything; that's made very clear by Dr. Manhattan.
The most meaning we can make out of it is either Ozymandias' manipulative and elitist form of utilitarianism that tries to create world peace through suffering; or Rorschach's double standards masquerading as moral absolutism.
But the ending makes it clear everything is ultimately futile any way we see it. People are not used to this. They're used to "bad guys lose, good guys win"
So Ozymandias becomes an actual villain and gets rightfully killed off.

viscus 02-05-2009 04:22 AM

That isn't really what I got out of it, after Dr. Manhattan changes his low opinion of humanity and Ozymandias' plan seems to work, but okay.

At least now that I have low expectations, I won't be disappointed.

Saya 02-05-2009 05:09 AM

I heard that about there being no alien, and I'm not surprised that Ozymandias might get killed too, I've been a little wary about the movie since the first trailer with dialogue came out, and I heard Rorschach. I agree with Kontan, he's a little too...articulate? Sounded a lot like Batman I thought.

I've never read the comic but the trailer got my attention. I'm itching to see it soooooooooooo bad. Yeah

Anyway, in current script, Ozymandias makes it seem that Dr. Manhattan has gone rogue and attacked. This is confirmed by new pages that Gibbons drew at Snyder's request.

KontanKarite 02-06-2009 03:38 PM

...Owlman. HA!

Godslayer Jillian 02-07-2009 12:47 AM

Well shit, I barely noticed that. Sorry, it's too easy to fall into that with superheroes. I meant Nite Owl. Ironically it's NOW that I'm drunk.
By the way, one other big thing that's bad about the movie:
According to myspace, My Chemical Romance is going to be on the soundtrack.

They're covering Dylan.

Yeah on my google page i have a music section. I heard they were doing a cover of the song Desolation Road. Never heard the song before. According to their blog or whatever they took the song and updated. The song was cut from over 10 minutes to like 3. They said it was because they couldn't make their version the same as long as the original because they were making a more hardcore version ( not real hard core but more pounding and energetic) and the song would get boring, repetitive and uninteresting for that long. I also don't think they could have kept up that pace for that long. Anyway, I listened to both versions and I as much as I used to like My Chemical Romance I can't say I like this version. It was quite boring anyway and didn't sound like them.

You should have to pass a talent test to be allowed to cover Dylan in public or on a recording.

Holy shit. So I saw it two days ago. And it really was awesome.
They didn't use the third script; I have no idea how many they wrote, but I thank them for not using the one with the spoilers I gave.
Ozymandias dead and a laser that doesn't work?
The movie was much better than that. In fact, the whole plan of Ozymandias in the climax is much better than the one in the comic in my opinion.
Though there were some small details that I didn't like. The emphasis was all wrong. Ozymandias looked like a genuinely bad guy that didn't even have emotion in hsi voice, and even though his friends called him a sociopath, Rorschach still looked like the hero of the movie instead of just a narrator that's pretty fucked up. They should have put more emphasis on the threat of nuclear annihilation, though. This movie is for our generation, and we can't understand how that might feel, so I could see my friends not sympathizing with Ozymandias' plan.

Despanan 03-08-2009 12:19 PM

As I noted elsewhere I thought it was pretty "Meh." The acting got on my nerves as did their "hollywooding" of the script. It just didn't feel like Watchmen.

Also: Apparently there's a Saturday Morning Cartoon :p

Way to repost that two posts after I did, Desp. Way to validate him, Drac.
