So here we go... Siouxsie, Bauhaus, Play Dead, Sex Gang Children, Red Lorry, etc... a very particular brand of late 70s/early 80s post-punk also known at the time as positive-punk... this is true goth. It's an off-shoot of punk, really. And the music was BEAUTIFUL. Influenced by psychedelia, punk and even prog. Dark gloomy imagery, in the artwork and band look. But smart, always pushing the envelope. Manson, HIM, Evanescence, Alkaline Trio, My Chemical Romance, etc... are just NOT goth. I'm not saying these bands might not enjoy gothic rock or have been influenced by it in some way.... but to call them "goth" is stretching it, no? Just my two cents. |
Bauhaus ... wait they aren't goth.

I recommend Screams for Tina.

Some people complain that She Wants Revenge have too derivative a sound, but as Joy Division won't be making any more music, I'll take what I can get. Are they goth? Not strictly, but I like them.
