Oh yeah, lets see some artwork baby!!

What kind of art do you like? What attracts you to that style? What do you like about it.. and.. if it applies.. what bothers you about it? What is your favorite piece from your favorite style?

ape descendant 07-23-2010 06:35 PM

One of the artists I seriously enjoy, is Gustave Klimt. I love his use of metalic paint and the way he represents the female form. My favorite piece that he did, at the moment, is The Kiss.

Can I post my own artwork?

ape descendant 07-23-2010 09:05 PM

If you enjoy your artwork, then yes. :D

I like photography the best. I think macro photography is really interesting because of the photographer taking the time to notice quite literally the little things in life and share it with us. I like being able to see the grooves on a circuit board or individual scales on a fish. The mystery of it is also intriguing. Sometimes that intergalactic landscape is actually a crust of bread! Who'd have thought? :) There isn't one photographer who is my favorite. I just know that oftentimes while perusing the billions of images on flickr I feel both inspired and daunted at the same time.

MC Escher. He kills everything.

Thank you, dear.

Dave McKean. Amazing artist. Other than that, I just shared one of my current CGIs in the photo thread, so I wont be posting it here.

I miss my kitten.

:/

KontanKarite 07-27-2010 07:11 PM

Is that a WIP or is it done? I once did a very minimal sketch of a cat and it looked pretty stylized to say the least.

Jonathan 07-27-2010 07:16 PM

Thank you for asking. There was thought of inking it, but that kitten is done. A critical eye can see half-aborted attempts to develop the piece further, but I realized more fuckery risked ruining it altogether.

KontanKarite 07-27-2010 07:24 PM

Ink it... or at least make a good line art of it on your pc. It's a nice, organic shape. I think I'd like to CG it if you clean up the lines. It'd make great practice.

BTW, nice work on it.

Miss Vindicated, you seem to have a good eye for composition, and I like your style. The one on top is my favourite. I did one copper plate etching years ago, but it was abysmal... I prefer woodcut and linoleum-cut printmaking.

Here's a pen&ink illustration of mine:

OMG I love those^^^

And I enjoyed linoleum cut printmaking as well... it just takes so damn long to cut into it...

Social Suicide 07-28-2010 11:17 AM

Right now, my favorite art is in the gallery of this website
http://www.timburton.com/
I don't think I have a favorite in there, I like a lot of it.

ape descendant 07-28-2010 11:18 AM

Jin, I never knew. :D Those pieces are damned expressive.

Linocut and woodcut carving definitely takes some time, but it's at least very straightforward. If you use sharp tools, it's not so bad. Here's a woodcut print I did a few years ago that I was pleased with.

http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/...seiotosmic.jpg

The wood block for this one was quite large; it took many hours to carve.

vindicatedxjin 07-28-2010 01:52 PM

I'll take a pic of my lino pieces when I get home. I never did a wood block :( I bet it was a pain in the ass!

TheFeatheredÆtheling 07-28-2010 02:07 PM

Carving wood is very similar to carving linoleum for the most part. It's a bit more challenging though due to the wood's hardness and especially its natural grain. The grain will cause the cuts to splinter if you're not careful, but the results can be fantastic if you control your blade. It's difficult to see in my example above, but the wood grain gives the final print an interesting, organic aspect that is not present in a linocut.

I look forward to seeing some of your linocuts.
