Feature article about gothic stuff
I'm writing a feature article about goth, with heavy emphasis on the media stereotype and whether or not it is deserved. If anyone has any links or ideas or just random crap to say, please post it; I would appreciate it.
By the way, this article is for my Writer's Craft class, and a big chunk of my mark depends on this. |
You could do a paper on the difference between how the media portrays 'goth' and how we define ourselves.
Kind of a fact vs. fiction thing. I'd google : Goth with a sledge hammer gothic miss manners What is goth? Also, some us us(me) wouldn't mind you educating the sheeple on the fact that Manson is not goth. And recommend a few good band such s Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Wumpscut.....etc. edit: I really hate to plug another website on here, but also see the thread on goth.net forums titled 'What goth is and is not.' Please don't kill me Darren? |
I've decided, after reading abot it on Amazon, that I'll probably buy a copy. Hell, at least it's not what we all thought it was going to be: some concerned parents or media person once again getting the wrong idea. Or some novel directed at whangsty teens.
:P |
What book is that?
I'm structuring my article as a comparison between the media image, the actual gothic culture, and *I hope, if I can get enough research on it,* why the media image happened, other than that the norm is conformist... I should also go downtown and see if I can get someone to do an interview with me. |

And as far as i remember, the only answer i got to my question "then what do you think is goth ?" was "an individuality". And that seems to be the only caracteristic you people could give me. Now don't get all wound up, i am not starting my stereotypes thing again. I myself am very interested in sociological studies of what is goth and i was surprised to see people basicly tell me that every motherfucker that is different from the rest is gothic. i am not trying to be rude. What i am is just pissed off. I am a goth and i find it damn offencive... How can you call yourself belonging to a particular style and not be able to give any characteristics of it?...Oh, but there go my stereotypes again. I'll just drop that. No point in trying to get a reasonable answer in that department. |
Based on my research (and I like what I found), a real "goth mentality" is characterized by a creative introspectiveness, with a desire to learn (unlike the general population). Check out the Goth With a Sledgehammer that WolfMoon mentionned earlier. There are some criteria (and other useful stuff) on there.

I think EVERYONE should read that article. It should be translated and distributed. My mother needs to read that article, but I doubt she'd believe it. She seems to have a hard time listening to reason sometimes.
|
According to that list of statements, I'm goth. I feel so special. :P
|
lol congrats!
I want to upload my article (A little accuracy checking or just general proofreading would be helpful :D), but it won't let me. It says "Upload Error: Could not upload Attachment to ././modules/PNphpBB2/files/gotharticlenopicts.doc." It's only 50 kb cuz I took out the pictures, and it's a .doc file. does anyone know why? |

I sent that article to a kid that used to be in my class before being expelled for drug-dealing. He used to call me Satanist (I punched him once for that, hehe). I asked him to read it carefully and tell me exactly how many times he found the word satanist there. His only answer was "LOL". Damn it. |
I need a title for my article. right now I have "Goth: Not so bad after all." but that's kinda lame.

Goth is, indeed about being an individual, something Manson is not. I'm terribly sorry to be the one to break it to you, but he's not. I mean how many people have done covers of Tainted Love? Far too many! As a matter of fact he seems to do cover songs merely to boost his record sales, not out of any true respect for the original artist or love of the original song. How many more covers is he going to do? I also think it's funny how sooooo many people thought his 'Dope Show' video was so original! What an original concept, that the record company/manager wants to drug you up and put you on stage to make money for them. After all, no one before ever thought of that! Not even Pink Floyd or Queen or Ozzy! And his make-up certainly never reminds me of Nik Fiend. Manson is not original and he's certainly not goth! |
Google "Goth/Gothic Art/Artwork".
Then Google "Dark Art" and the like. The "Dark Art" search results will have the first search suggestion there. Voltaire...Ladies and Gents I am drooling. Shelley?(sp?), Byron?, Neruda?,...Ok ok, quit waving the paddles at me!! :x I rather the kittycat today... :D *Soul* |

And as i already said...Manson isn't trying to be goth. It is hard to be yourself and not resemble someone else in one way or another. So as to his not being original...it's a matter of taste. I think he combined some ideas we've already see in other artists very well. And I am not trying to make people like him. What gets on my nerves is that people call him a gothic wannabe. Again, he isn't trying to be any particular style at all. He doesn't even call himself a rocksinger. As to his makeup...The image isn't the most important thing that determines an individuality. Have you ever listened to the words of his songs, and not only the ones he made videos for? And many really goth bands have similar make up...but that doesn't make people hate them, does it? Manson sings about irritating and disgusting truths (not in all of his songs, but in some anyway) and you either like him for it or you hate him. We just don't agree in tastes, that's all. |

Al, I'm trying to catch my breath after laughing my ass off at that!!!
You rock, dude! lml I give Manson props for exactly one thing: Market strategy. |

^_^ thanks. That person was a douchebag and if it comes back I will chase it off again. With a broom. |
Well I feel like a super model!!

I like Manson. Granted, they indeed do covers in order to get radio play, but they have always been up-front about the fact that they are in the entertainment Industry to make $$$. I wouldn't blame anyone for that.
Sure, their more recent stuff pales in comparison with their older stuff, but I think they (and admittedly he, although I see them more as a band than just him as an individual) have earned some modicum of respect for their whole AntiChrist Superstar tour. That took BALLS. |
I would like to say something about one of the more common misconceptions of goth, although I am fairly comfortable that the person who asked for input has long since finished his or her assignment.
One of the popular ideas about goth is that it usually involves satan worship or other involvement with the occult, and depression/self-mutilation. I have thought long and hard about an explanation for why this is not so, and I would like to share what I have come up with. I read in another thread on this board that someone knew witches who would rather die than be called goth, goths who are not witches, satan worshippers who are not goth and so on ... this is becuase all of these things-- goth, satan worshipper, wiccan, witch-- are completely unrelated. Saying all goths are depressed wiccans or vice versa, is like saying that all businessmen are crooked cheating bastards. There is a class of people that are gothic, a class of people that are depressed, wiccan, and so on. Each of these words is a LABEL (yes i said LABEL, why don't you?) for a different classification of people. It is perfectly acceptable for a person to belong to more than one clas of people, becuase there is diversity within the human race. Some people are gothic and depressed but not wiccan. some people are wiccan and gothic but not depressed. others are none of the above, or only one of the above. People belong to different groups due to their interests and other things about their persona. And it is possible that the different groups sometimes intermingle within each other. But being classified on one group does not mean that you must be classified within the other as well, nor does it mean that once you are classified in a specific group, you cannot be classified in any of the others. The groups are not interchangeable, only intermixable. I'm sorry if this is a dead thread (heh, rhyme). I only wanted to share my thoughts on that particular subject. ~J |
