If it's in terms of important Goth music: Joy Division - Closer Bauhaus - In the Flat Field Christian Death - Only Theatre Of Pain Siouxsie & The Banshees - Juju Sisters Of Mercy - First and Last and Always Alien Sex Fiend - Who's Been Sleeping In My Brain? The Cure - Pornography Sex Gang Children - Song and Legend Specimen - Wet Warm Cling Film Red Velvet Crush Fields Of The Nephalim - Dawnrazor Kommunity FK - The Vision and The Voice Clan Of Xymox - Medusa Dead Can Dance - Into The Labyrinth The Birthday Party - Junkyard Cocteau Twins - Garlands (i limited it to 15 becuase I'd already made this list in a 'Top 15 Essential Goth Albums' thread on another forum) If it's in terms of albums that influenced Goth then there are way too many to list. It would have to include albums by: Leonard Cohen Velvet Underground David Bowie Iggy Pop Lou Reed T-Rex The Doors The Rolling Stones etc etc Not forgetting, of course, that bands within the genre have obviously had massive influence on the music (Joy Division, Siouxsie & The Banshees etc.) |

Meh. I really wasn't around during the rise of 'goth' music, but I know several bands who claim to have been influenced by Nine Inch Nails, 'The Downward Spiral', and I know early Ministry gave way to industrial as we know it. Kudos to whoever mentioned Throbbing Gristle, I'd have to throw in Skinny Puppy as the same sort of influence.

I decided anything before '75 was too early to be differentiated from the vacuous influence of 'it was influential because it happened first', and nothing after '89 because the first wave had definately happened by then. Last, if a band is already listed, I don't add later releases, Bauhaus the exception there.

That's an excellent list, Sobeh. I'm going to a Bauhaus concert in a few weeks (supporting NIN), but I still don't understand how Bauhaus can still be playing after all these years. I hope with all my little, black heart they're not going to be a cover band!
