What is goth?

Okay I watched this video on youtube, I found it very interesting indeed.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=IZKAoqW4PMU&search=voltaire

I am going to buy that guy's book. The words he said were very defined about goth. Goodness,..bravo *claps*

Erasmus 07-29-2006 10:52 PM

A goth is a person of an ancient germanic tribe. That's one term.

I Taste of Blood 07-30-2006 12:27 AM

thats true! and no one can change the person u see in the mirror every day!

Twizted Whispers 08-30-2006 05:42 AM

Yeah i have that book i bought it a couple of weeks ago...it tells you everything from how to look goth to how to dance goth its is very interesting book to read so if you want to buy it, i would buy it at amazon.com(were i bought mine).

Slap Your Love 08-30-2006 05:46 AM

Lol I saw that at Hot topic once. It made me laugh.

Delkaetre 08-31-2006 06:50 AM

Voltaire's a good fellow. He's one of the icons that does try to properly represent us, and his work has an appropriately tongue-in-cheek quality to it.

Puppet Master 08-31-2006 11:07 AM

Good video, voltaire is cool, I have seen some of his work and music and I find him to be a very pleasent chap.

He tells you how to look goth...? I'm outta here... Nancy Kilpatrick's book was bad enough, I don't need another author telling me I'm not a goth if I don't dress in black velvet and lace all the time.

Slap Your Love 09-06-2006 06:02 AM

Lol. Agreed Minyaliel. Although I would dress in black velvet and lace if I could afford such a thing, but for the most of us we cannot. =x

Agreed.... no one should even consider themselves goth if all they've done is follow some guidelines that some guy wrote in a book.

I havent read the book. Don't want to either.

Godslayer Jillian 09-06-2006 05:03 PM

Uhh.... you obviously have not met Voltaire.
It's not a serious "How To Be Goth" manual. That's what makes it so cool; it's a satire.
Besides, if anyone had any authority about what it goth, I'd give him the staff anyway.

Delkaetre 09-06-2006 05:12 PM

What is Goth?
Satire, mostly. Any part of the culture you look at has elements of satire and morbid humour to it- there's no such thing as a serious how-to manual, unless someone's just cataloguing the history of the culture. Voltaire acknowledges our humour pretty well.

Quinny 09-06-2006 06:14 PM

Lol sweet as, i got the wrong impression :D. I thought it was just one of those books written to milk money from its buyers

BlackWidow 09-06-2006 07:08 PM

Hm, I rather enjoyed that video. I dont know if that's the pain pills I am on right now or I normally would like it. But it seems like my type f book. I dont think it's a manual of how to be goth, I think it's more of an informational book, where we came from, what most of us are about, stereotypes, how we became goth, what typical goth people are like, mis-judged people. Stuff like that. When I get money I am definately buy this book. It's a goth handbook. Also to be used against pesimists who hate us and people who judge us and stereotype us. Every poser should buy one too so they can get a good, swift kick in the ass-a wake up call-"You're not goth!!!" So they can rightfully become an Emo.

Slap Your Love 09-07-2006 05:33 AM

^ This is true.

BlackWidow 09-08-2006 10:53 PM

Wow, Slap, you actually agree somewhat with something I say? Hm, this is going on my "Holy Shit" list.

PoupeeCelestia 09-09-2006 12:09 PM

I canīt belive that one of the most old questions ever is still standing with that kind of stuff. I wouldnīt really buy that, because if I want to laught Iīll read the "How to Be Goth" guides from the-night.com
You just canīt go and stand on tv talking about what is "goth" or not with such a bunch of people with different mentality.
**I sense that Voltaire had one of those "oh, I think I forgot something" gestures at the end of the video clip.

Godslayer Jillian 09-09-2006 11:34 PM

Wrong!
Voltaire, if he is not already, should be the spokesman of Goth (after me, of course)
How can you disagree with a guy that wrote these lyrics? :
If I Only Were a Goth
I'd be thinner
I'd be taller
*Good clining on my collar
With skin pale as a must* [not sure it says this, but that's what I understood]
Dressed in black
I'd go creeping
When the normal folk are singing
If I only were a goth
With my hair up, I'd look fancy
Just like Siouxsie and the Banshees
With silk or velvet cloth
Dressed in boots
Never sandals
And the room
Will be lit with candles
If I only were a goth
Yes, I
Wanna die
From the bottom of my heart
Impure
Would I like another clothes
Well, sure
And after that
We'll go listen to The Cure
I'd pretend to be a vampyre
Like the stories 'round the campfire
I'd suck your bloody throat *slurps*
Yes the thing
I'd be best at
Is impersonating Lestat
If I only were a goth
[didn't understand the next three lines]
Yes, the world would be depressing
Over death I'd be obsessing
And this corpse that I'm undressing
Would be sexier
I'm guessing
With my dyed eye get scurvy [?]
And I worship Peter Murphy
If I only were a goth.

Cicero 09-10-2006 12:09 AM

Voltaire <3. I've been planning on buying his book for quite some time. He has an excellent sense of humour, it really is a shame people don't quite catch it sometimes.

unedifying 09-10-2006 06:54 AM

lol, So have I.

And I won't be able to buy them for a couple of weeks... But I guess I'll enjoy them all the more when I do! =D (I could have bought a couple yesterday, but I bought skin lightening products and a gift from my Grandmother.)

PoupeeCelestia 09-10-2006 08:35 AM

XD
With my dyed eye get scurvy [?]
And I worship Peter Murphy

Maybe he just wanted them to rhyme!

Godslayer Jillian 09-10-2006 12:58 PM

Nah, I just have a terrible hearing capability.:p

Delkaetre 09-10-2006 02:40 PM

I'll have to see about borrowing a book or two of his... my lack of cash makes purchasing anything impossible.

oblivia 09-12-2006 03:09 PM

I've heard about him before, I think I've read an interview or an article about him on Morbid Outlook. He's very interesting, seems to definitely have an excellent head on his shoulders. I do like his easiness in answering the guy on CNN there, that is certainly impressive.

Godslayer Jillian 09-12-2006 06:35 PM

Correcting Statement: Now, I can't remember if that song is indeed of Voltaire, or of Thou Shalt Not.
