I find this fascinating. Why do you suppose Americans aren't voting???

I think Americans in general are disenfranchised with the whole voting process. After 2000 a lot of people just didn't care anymore. It's ironic though both the 2000 and 2004 elections were very close so obviously votes did count. I think the electoral college is bunk, 5 elections in the history of America have gone the otherway because of it. That's 5 to many IMO. People are also just lazy. None of this however keeps people from bitching about the government. It is their right to do so, however I feel that if you don't vote you don't have the "right" to bitch about it. All in all people need to get off their lazy asses and vote and get more involved in politics rather than just crying

Elections everywhere are a fucking charade. They are designed to make you think you have a say in the political process when you really dont. So you might ask, who does? The major corporations spending big bucks on elections campaigns for these so called honest leaders (read fascists).

And you are right, alot of people realize this now yet fail to do anything about it except for bitch about it. Fucking hypocrites. Others cut themselves off from society and become hermits.. oh wait thats me.

Actually with the way the last elections went its pretty clear that the people do have a say. Hell even people's perception of the war in Iraq is influencing how the war is being run.

Again imo a facade to make you think you have a say. Ofcouse, that is just my opinion. I have no faith in the electoral process or in politicians who imo again are ALL lying cocksuckers. The church and the state are all failing us now because they are not relevant anymore. We have to evolve futher.

So, why not have voters register wireless devices by serial number and vote over a secure wireless connection. Then allow voters to vote for their county, state, and their national politicians from home.

We have the technology already.

No such thing as a sercure connection.... Trust me....

AT any rate.... We're a Democratic REPUBLIC not a democracy.... even 20 years ago we would not have the technology to let everyone have equal say in all matters of state/country... honestly look at the recount issues, I'm not sure we have the ability today to really truly enact an exact 1:1 vote..... We DO have say in our government, the problem is... its reactive not proactive. If politicians take bribes from companies we need to kick them out, its that simple. We dont have say over what they do/how they vote, but if they're afraid to vote against what the people want, then they wont. Nobody would be stupid enough to do things their way just to get kicked out of office, have the changes reversed 2-4 years later, and have their party lose say in politics.... Thats the beauty of it. But again, we dont have say in what happens NOW we have say what happens in the near future... indirectly. Hell, if we did have a direct vote on issue we would end up with some very strange laws.... the average person in this country is not even close to intelligent enough to actually understand how a governing body needs to work simply to be self sustaining.....

Anyway, people are always going to argue, look at the housing market.... Housing prices are FINALLY falling in the US for the first time in 10 years, the best thing that has happened for the US econemy in decades.... yet the stock market goes down for some reason. I really dont understand people sometimes, they take good things and make them look bad just so they can cheat someone out of money.

Why don't people vote?

im 14 i cant even vote yet and i think thats bullshit bcuz i have a job and they take tax outa my check so thats taxation without reprsentation.
and i dont think the votes really work i pretty sure that the elections get cheated. but just incase my vote would count i would vote . just incase

Really, that term just confuses me. I always thought that it ment that one exalts the state over all else, (ie. extreme nationalisim), coupled with a squelching of other things, like religion, confilicting views, etc. It could possibly lead to an overly centralized government, with all dues going to the state. Really, it just sort reminds me of what I guess would be how various forms of communism are acted out. (Ie: Stalinistic Russia, possibly People's Republic of China, in various forms...) Heck, I'd like to see some ideas on the issue because really, it just looks like it is all about control. You can just choose whether it is in mint or strawberry flavor.

Anyway, apart from laziness, people probably aren't voting because of being placed in positions where one must choose the lesser of two evils. Given that, some might say, "What's the point?" Although ignorance surely plays a role as well... I mean everyone has their own idea about how the voting system is rigged. What is the truth?

I'll be able to vote in '08, so I'll try and make an intelligent choice at least.

Just curious..Hear lots of people saying "republic, and not a true democracy" But haven't heard anyone say Federalist. I read somewhere that's what are true govt is.....?

I don't like talking about politics... it seems to get some people really upset if you say something that they disagree with, but...

Before the 2000 elections in the US, there really wasn't as much conversation about it compared to the 2004 elections. At that time, I was on a gothic newsgroup and on "another blogging site", reading what all of the democrats were saying (because they were truly more outspoken than anyone republican). I noticed how other countries, mainly the UK, Australia and sometimes Canada would talk about it more than Americans were bringing it up. I am just telling you what I observed. And after all of the liberal debates online, I would have expected Bush to lose to Kerry, but that didn't happen. I guess people don't vote because they're too exhausted from discussing it online. :}

Yeah. I agree. It mostly turns into arguments.

It just seems one side has better PR than the other.

Although alot of old people vote.(Retired people have lots of pull in local elections) Most of the younger people I know question "why vote?" becuase it won't count anyways... Dissilutionment (I know bad spelling) mainly. I think we've grown up in a generation of movies and talkshows that constantly push that your vote doesn't (or implies) that it doesnt count that they believe it.

Over the last several years it's changed around but I don't think we'll see a turn around for awhile yet.

It's sad because since the sixties it's become a "us vs them" scenario. When all along the govt is us. If we started being more proactive in govt and go to meetings and ask questions I think the feelings would reverse....But why would people want to give up Oprah or American Idol for a night to hear some old politicians speak....There's the answer.

Oh.. And alot of movies and tv shows push the idea that it's us against the government also. I think a good part of our country is that: if we want, we can be a part of it if we choose.
