Dance Music

I've recent become interested in modern dance music, especially electronic dance music. On a related note, a friend has begun to plan a dance party and I offered to provide some music.

My personal preference in this matter tend to run toward EBM, power noise, and general hard electronica. Anything that can be danced to, regardless of whether or not it is "dance music" (or even electronic music) is just fine for me. My friend, however, might not appreciate the harsher sound of industrial-influenced music.

My question is: what bands should I look up, for both myself and my friend?

Byrnsweord 01-22-2007 06:01 AM

Rollergirl is a good dance group, and maybe some DJ Danny D..

Ictum 01-22-2007 07:56 AM

The Crüxshadows! :O

Circle V 01-22-2007 07:12 PM

Ooo, I forgot about the Crüxshadows...

Thanks, I'll look those up, Byrnsweord.

If you are looking for some more mellow, mainstream kind of techno/dance music, try looking up Louie Devito's stuff. It's fairly good, played alot up here at the one "club".

Morrigan_Dubh 01-25-2007 04:58 AM

The Pet Shop Boys! :p
Goldfrapp has some great stuff... Depeche Mode has some uber remixes...
But I don't really know much about the genres you mentioned - here's a website with a huge list of stuff:
http://kzsu.stanford.edu/eklein/
You might find something in there :)

Dependent on exactly what kind of dancey music you're interested- there's a ton of great artists out there.

Bob Sinclair
Bananarama
Lee Cabrera
Kaskade
Benassi Bros.
Benny Benassi
Goldfrapp
Scissor Sisters
Gabriel and Dresden

.....to name a few in the dance club circuit.

If you're looking for something a little harder and a little more electronic, then theres:

Carl Cox
Christopher Lawrence
Paul Oakenfold
John Kelley
DJ Keoki
Josh David
Mars & Mystre
Dyloot
Dutchboy
Darkstarr
Judge Jules
AK1200
MC Armani

...and the list goes on and on.....

I third the Crüxshadows.

Schwarz Stein is a Japanese duo who play an interesting EBM/Trance music hybrid with melodic vocals.

I couldn't find any videos of theirs on Youtube, but here's a link to a slideshow set to their music by a fan:

There is no such thing as "dance music" per se, you can dance to anything, hell, I dance around the house to Behemoth and Napalm Death. Most people would not consider Death metal and Grind dance music, but I do.
You are probably referring to what is called House, which usually contains a snappy 4/4 kick beat, catchy melodies and lyrics.

Here's some House you may like:
Sixteen Souls, the Serotonin Project, Cranky Scientist, Fedde Le Grande, DJ Esp.
and Trance: Astral Projection, 4 Strings, Tiesto, Darude and Art of Trance

KontanKarite 03-08-2007 07:40 PM

Happy Dude beat me to it.

House is a good direction to go for the less goth/industrial persuasion.

Um... go on-line and look up the track names of DDR games. They usually have some decent "party dance" music.

I really like "Mr. Wonderful" and "Castles in the Sky". "Heaven" is also a good track to dance to.

happy_dude 03-08-2007 07:41 PM

Haha, DDR music. Butterfly by Smile.dk FTW!

I feel exactly the same way. I dance to Tom Waits and Mozart.

Goldfrapp Goldfrapp Goldfrapp. I think she's simply amazing.

There's a whole series of CDs put out by Ultra Records that collect "pop" dance music. They go by Ultra Dance, Ultra Trance, Ultra Eighties, Ultra Electro and many other's. I'd recommend those if you're looking for more mainstream songs.

happy_dude 03-11-2007 05:30 PM

Goldfrapp is a duo, not a solo artist.

Haunted House 03-17-2007 12:39 PM

I recomend some dancey goth rock/deathrock songs to scatter into the mix. Stuff like:

Pagan Lovesong, Baby Turns Blue - Virgin Prunes
En Hiver - Cinema Strange
We're so Happy - Danse Society
Isolation, These Days - Joy Division
Dancing - Bauhaus
Ignore the Machine - Alien Sex Fiend

Just a few suggestions.

HumanePain 03-17-2007 12:43 PM

There is a dance mix version of Happy House (by Siouxsie and the Banshees).

I did not know that. I've seen a few videos, and I've only ever noticed her (the singer I assume?), so I had no idea. Is she just a singer, or do they both sing, and does she help with the music, or is it just the other person?

chelseagirl 03-20-2007 10:06 AM

If you want to check out some harsher stuff, terror ebm, hellektro, etc., I second D-RANGED's list, and would like to add:

Tactical Sekt (my all time favs!)
Grendel

I just went to website of Tactical Sekt, because I was intrigued by the name, and I downloaded some of their song clips. I don't usually like that sort of music, but it kind of got to me. I'm likeing it. Good energy.

Death101 03-20-2007 05:30 PM

Anything from Metropolis Records.

As far as I know the singer (Alison Goldfrapp) writes the lyrics, the two of them compose the music and the other person (Will Gregory) plays the music.

On the topic of Tactical Sekt - I haven't yet heard them - could someone post a link to their site?

Also, Marco V creates some awesome stuff http://www.last.fm/music/Marco+V

They have more songs on their myspace page too, including one of my very favorites, "Souless"
