The bones of jesus

Old story, as they discovered them some time ago. But now the discovery has been blown out of preportion riding the da vinchi code steam train.

Anyway, the only established facts so far, is that a tome has been found carrying a minimum of 4 caskets.

One saying joseph, another saying mary, and another saying jesus (oh and another saying the son of jesus).

Atm the jurys out, though it has been proven that all of these are from the same family. Due to the popularity of the names at the time, it is undetermined whether this is the real deal.

Implications: Disproves the resurection story, as discusses the bible relys on the physical form of jesus transcending and not the spirit, and also questions whether jesus was a virgin.
Could cause a rupture in the christian church, though may be ignored, as some still ignore eveolution, and also an even smaller amoutn still reject the earth is round saying there lies of the devil (yes people stil believe this).

I am not sticking to sides atm, though I am not christian, I am not sticking to ideas which have yet to be proven either.

Anyway, what does everyone else think of this discovery (without going into a flame religious war).

Kraven de Sade 02-28-2007 03:26 PM

I don't believe that there ever was a Jesus as depicted in the Bible, so such a discovery is inconsequential to me.

Puppet Master 02-28-2007 03:33 PM

Whether Jesus existed as portrayed in the bible, or whether in reality he was a green alien that spurted flames from his anus is not the point.

What Jesus repersents in the minds of the masses is a powerfull drug that has steared western cizilization for hundreds of years.
Christianity was why early christians where killed by the romans in there dens of carnage for the amusement of the crowd, christianity is the reason behind the crusades, christianity is the reason behind the burning times, and chrsitianity has defined the morals we live by.

Now if there was undeniable proof this claim was in fact real, it would make all the death ultimatley meaningless to those who have believed in Jesus for there whole existance.
It would deny to them there belief of salvation, and would create a cesspool of spirtual chaos.

This is why I am keeping a close eye, and see how this develops.

If anyone has ever seen the Family Guy movie, that is most likely what the extent of Jesus's powers were.

This is kinda intresting though, I'd like to know the outcome.

Well, I think you refer to the time when he played tricks with his hands, but let's not forget:

Like to see Family Guy insult Mohammed and still get away with their lives...

O shit, Jesus is packing heat. lol

Jesus is, for all intents and purposes, a mythical figure. He may well have been based off of an actual person, but since it has been over 2 millenia now, and the bible has been translated through, what, 3? 4? languages now?, there is almost no basis for comparison. Anyone with even the smallest amount of faith could brush this aside, the same way many still believe that the "Shroud" is real, or that evolution is wrong. There is no way to prove anything about these bodies, since we don't have any proof of what he looked like, or any of his DNA, so theres no way science can show it one way or the other.

And besides, the Bible is always open to interpretation, so its quite easy to change Jesus' "transcendence" (sp?) into mearly his spiritual one, or, since it is said in the bible that he was seen after the tomb was open, maybe his transcendence was only back to the mortal plane. After all, he basically commited suicide (comparable to todays suicide by police), and suicide is one of the deadly sins. <sarcasm>Or better yet, maybe the "son" of Jesus is some fortunate sinner that Jesus took under his wing to raise in the goodness of the lord?</sarcasm> It is rediculously easy to interpret the bible, theres sections you can use for just about anything.

*shrugs* I've seen too many people ignore stuff that there was tons of evidence about to think that this is going to cause any change in a major, established religion.

Panther 03-01-2007 06:02 AM

I seem to remember that a lot of scholars don't even think Jesus was named that. A lot of people think he was actually named Joshua, originally.

I dunno, this doesn't seem to hold water.

Caught 03-01-2007 09:51 AM

I don't think the bones they found are what they think they are. Religion has always been something weird to me but interesting, people always need something to believe in. But christianity has had its trouble last centuries, maybe it's just because I live in Europe but people don't go to the church that much anymore and I'm sure I don't know one person who's truly christian.
Ok, so they found some bones and tell it's from jesus, this could be just a rumor, something said to tell people: "See, he excisted!" and for some people that's enough to believe some of the rest is true even if he didn't resurect he still could have done all those miracles.
Right. I don't believe what christians do, but I do believe people aren't stupid and maybe they did saw a light, the light of truth inside their heads? Something's slowly changing and I hope more people will see it.
As for the da vinci code, great book and not only because of what Dan brown wrote, he made people listen to him (yes even the church) which is quite an achievement and perhaps the mystery about christianity is finally getting clear.

There is a quote from an apostle which makes this argument void. Which was quouted on richard and judy. It said that if there was no physical resurection, then this whole thing is a sham (not the exact sentence but the same idea).
Also the idea of body and soul is more of a greek invention, the early bible had no difference between the two, stating they were the same.
Also the acts he performs (e.g. breaking bread) are byond that of a spirit.

Either way, this wont probably amount to anything, due to the fact you cant test the dna of god.

If however they found the ancestors of the line of david, and tested that against the supposed joseph, and then discovered a similiar genetic code, then this could become likely.

With the son of jesus, tests have allready proven that they share the same genetic code, so this son is the son of this man who was named jesus, whether it was the jesus we think of, is still to be proven (remember jesus was a popular name at the time).

Still though it will be explained away, the idea will send ripples. Less countries are christian now. England is now taking a more "will believe in it, because I cant be bothered to think of anything else" approach.

Either way whatever emerges it will be an interesting show.

Me neither. That's why I doubt Jesus existed, at least not the Jesus aka Super Boy with the Sky-God Pop.

I echo this. Some thinking patterns render a person totally immune to logic and evidence, no matter how much they pile up.

Though it would take great fortitude to continue believing in certain things even against the odds, I have gone the route of "we'll see". It's really the only way I can see myself living even slightly comfortable. If life is a gift, enjoy it. I for one, refuse to live under a rock out of fear of an ever lasting torment.

Again, I say. We shall see. Though I doubt I'll give a damn.

deep insight 03-10-2007 08:59 AM

once you get into the spirital world and really understand the argument
of each side, both good and evil, you come to see that a person of which they spoke of called jesus could have contained powers and knowledge to the extent stated.
once you see these powers awaken in you and see the dark ways in-which if you chose you can manipulate your energy and others yet also if you chose the other-side meaning not demonic/ dark how you can help...

its hard to say with what the authors of these book on jesus, mohammad and buddha ect. state about skills these people obtained and lession they lernt that they didnt exsist

these two sides good and evil are in constant battle.

Drake Dun 03-10-2007 05:39 PM

your alright

MollyMac 03-11-2007 08:29 AM

There are no fucking sides but what you create for yourself.

looker 03-11-2007 03:32 PM

Pretty interesting, but nothing will come out of it probably, due to the fact, as someone stated above, that no DNA match can be established with a deity...

MollyMac 03-11-2007 04:21 PM

C'mon, you *know* that they will, next year, unearth the Dead Sea centrifuged blood of Christ in a clay test tube, neatly labelled

I hate to interupt the heated discusion here, but The Bones of Jesus sounds like a cool band name. Hahaha.

When I saw you had posted here, I seriously anticipated seeing you had written this:
I will take those bones. And I will make a bone necklace.

A Simple Poet 03-12-2007 07:18 AM

Well, I happen to be a Christian and I take solace in the fact that the documentary is flawed simply because it is highly unlikely that the remains of Jesus and all of his family would be neatly collected and interned in a tomb which they could not afford.

Furthermore, Jesus's earthly pop, Joseph, died while Jesus was still alive and was likely buried in his hometown of Nazareth. Are they telling me that someone went up and dug this fellow up, take him all the way to Jerusalem, just to bury him again?

I didn't see the documentary but I saw multiple interviews with the producer on different programs where he could not refute a lot of the arguments made by professional non-Christian archeologists that would lend authenticity to the find.

Plus, isn't it wild how every year around Easter some religious discovery seems to pop up? We have Jesus's bones this year, Thomas's Gospel the year before, and the Shroud awhile back.

The Easter Bunny is certainly displeased with her lack of press.

KontanKarite 03-12-2007 08:05 AM

I thought the Easter bunny was a boy.

Puppet Master 03-12-2007 09:39 AM

Urrrghhhh please dont meantion christianity and easter in the same context.

Easter is not a christian holiday...well it is now.

Easter came from the goddess Eoster, whose symbols where *surprise* *surprise* the egg and the rabbit.

Ask any christian to make a convincing argument why eggs are allways sold in droves around easter.
