Rat poison in dog food

Hi All,

Has anyone heard about the poisons winding up in the dog food? It’s been happening here in South Africa for about a month but the PETA newsletter I got mentioned it was happening in the States, too. Anyone heard anything about it? As far as I’ve seen here, the pet food companies are talking to people that have reported the cases. They only realized something was wrong and started pulling the dry foods off the shelves after a few dogs died after eating the foods. Apparently here, brake fluid got into a batch of dog food at the factory and was packaged and put on the shelves like that. From what I’ve heard from my friends in the States, it was Rat Poison over there.
I’m not fond of dogs, but that’s just cruel. How sick would you have to be to go out of your way to do that? What’s even more sickening is that I KNOW my cats and my neighbor’s cats attack the dog food bowl when he’s not looking. I’d be devastated if I lost my babies to that!
Scary, ha?

I didn't hear about rat poison, but there was salmonella in wet dog food this past week or two.

This kinda reminds me of that SNL skit with Will Ferrell selling the rat poison in a bag with a dog on it that looked EXACTLY like a dog food bag and the food looked exactly like dog food.

Yup, it's happening here in the states too. I'm not sure if ALL dogfood has been afected, but I believe the brand Science Diet was the first to discover the rat poison problem and start pulling from the shelves.

How bored and sick does a peson have to be to come up with and EXECUTE something like that. I mean WTF?! That's some seriously sick high school shit.

I'm sure there will be a class action lawsuit. The company that actually made the food was located out of China. They were having a problem with rats in the wheat that they used for the wheat gluten, so they fed the rats poison and actually used the contaminated wheat. This effected wet canned/pouched cat/dog food. I had no idea about it until my aunt told me. I have 2 cats. Thankfully they only get wet food as a treat every once in a while. If anything ever happened to them, I'd be devastated. That company deserves to be put under.

It makes me feel so bad for the doggies who died. I hate it when animals die. This whole thing makes me sad. :(

It's all over the news here. Rat poison, in wet and dry dog and cat food..
In numerous different brands.
Luckily, my dog, my cats, and my ferrets all have a massive supply of food that I bought a month or so before the rat poison incident.

Looks like a few more animals have died here because of food that had been bought before it was public knowledge. I hope the sick bastards that did this get what's coming to them!

seriously- this whol rat poison thing just just beyond me. WTF?!

DarkHeartedDemoness 03-30-2007 09:16 AM

I am so grateful that I bought a big bag of cat food almost a month ago. Diego will be able to live off of that and tuna until I'm certain his food is safe again.

Arashi 03-30-2007 06:28 PM

If it is incertain that the food is safe or not by the time all of my furry friend's food runs out, I'll will resort to feeding them normal 'ol meat..
Have to keep my children safe.
