Anne Rice Novels
I don't mean to start what may seem to be a clich'e thread around here but I wanted to ask if anybody remembered the details behind how Rice's vampires came into existence. I no longer own my copies of the original vampire trilogy books, having lost or loaned them out over the years. I remember there seemed to be two stories behind it; one true, the other a myth based on the truth. And that there was something about some greek or egyptian gods. It's been so many years since I read them now that I can't be sure. Also, were the origins of the witches ever revealed? I never read the Mayfair series because the first book bored me.

I THINK she talks about the origins of the vampires in "The Vampire Lestat" but I don't know if its the true story or not. It was something about demons entering an Egyptian king and queen. But I could be wrong.

AnNe RiCe
Tifany is right , she wrote the the eygiption king and queen were possed by demons and there souls tainted , the went on to drink and drink and drink till there the kings thirst for blood subsided and the vamire queen was still so hungrey for blood she took the kings distaste for it and drank his blood before then she and the king werre turned to living stone and ere protected for hundreds of years by the ancient vampire marias

I can barely make out what you wrote.
I remember the part about how akasha became a vampire, I'm trying to find out about the legend behind it. It dealt with a god of either greek or egyptian mythology. I guess I'll just have to go find copies of the books and browse through them again. |
yeah that was a shocker i wasnt in a sober state of mind if you really want to know i will dig the book out and copy the relevent chapters if you want mate !

Yes, that Jesus thing upsets me as well. Besides the obvious, what could've possessed her to stray from the Vampires and go to the Lord? -_-

well if you think about it, she started going religious with her writing as far back as memnoch. And technically, religion has been a constant, underlying thread through the vampire chronicles from the beginning. armand didn't believe in god or the devil, or at least he'd never experienced anything to convince him that either one existed. which is why he went into the sun when he saw veronica's veil. I never really understood how he was saved from all of that. but anyway. somewhere along the lines rice rediscovered her catholic upbringing and returned to it. I think since her husband's death she's gone extremely religious. that sort of thing tends to inspire more religous thoughts in a lot of people, especially those that are already prone to it.
i remember how akasha and enkil were turned. what i was trying to find was the mythology behind the nature of vampires, that rice used as a sort of origin. i guess i didn't word it correctly in the beginning. ~E.D. |
Did anyone read any of the Mayfair witches? I felt as if it was as good as, if not better than the vampire chronicals.
I just finished servent of the bones and now I kinda feel sorry for Azriel. He has to go on living forever because his father sold him out. Poor specter.. |
im a big fan of anne rice and have nearly all of her books but quite distraught at what shes now writing but she has always been a catholic
remember memnoch the devil? the most blasphemous thing i thought a catholic could say; lestat travelled with Satan, she re wrote the story of beginning and lestat drank the blood of christ from his neck!!! |
Well, if she actually takes her time with them and thinks things through, I think her new jesus books might actually make for an interesting read.
I read, somewhere, that there's a scene in the book in which jesus, as a boy, kills a bully, then realising what he's done, brings the kid back to life. I don't know of any scriptures that speak of jesus having powers like that as a child. so there is definately a supernatural thread in the book. |
I read above that Tiffany_the_writer thought the story of Enkil and Akasha was in the Vampire Lestat. I just thought I'd say it's not. It's in Queen of the Damned. I didn't even have to check because I still haven't finished the Vampire Lestat because he bores me to tears >.< The Queen of the Damned was way more interesting.
I started reading The Tale of the Body Theif about A year ago after finishing Queen of the Damned and reading only a quarter of The Vampire Lestat, but realized I needed to know the information in The Vampire Lestat before I could understand the Tale of the Body Theif. It stinks. I want to read the rest so bad because I know it will be interesting...I just don't really like Lestat. |
I'm not spreading misinformation because I did read the Queen of the Damned because the Vampire Lestat bored me. Sorry if I skipped over the second half and then went back. Actually, no I'm not. If you don't like my methods you can just go suck a f**k.
This is the second post you've bashed me for something and I understand it's common for newbies to get bashed. But the first time was for my opinion on a book and this time it was because you assumed that I had no idea what I was talking about. I think you need to shut your mouth and get all the facts before you judge. |

Maybe you should stick to books aimed at people your age, like Goosebumps. ;) |
NecromanticSunshine - You got bashed because you're claiming something didn't happen in a book you didn't read. How the fuck does somebody do that??
If Lestat bores you so much, why the hell are you reading any of the chronicles anyway, considering most of them are about lestat? Back to the reason you got bashed: Quote:
Also, by skipping over the Vampire Lestat, you're missing out on how Lestat created Gabrielle, and Nikki, how he met Marius, Armand, Akasha, his band, how he became the owner of the Theatre de Vampir, all the secrets he tried keeping from Louis and Claudia - because the bulk of TVL actually takes place prior to his creating Louis, how he's not so much of an evil bastard as Louis' impression of him was at first, (course I guess that is a matter of opinion), and a shitload of other info that's vital to the entire trilogy. Methinks your method of reading is not sound, and only seems to provide motive for your own confusion. If you stop reading the end of a story before reading the rest of it, and stop picking and choosing parts of a story to read, then maybe you'll be a little less confused, and in the future, be able to provide more acurate information. Not bashing you, just trying to lend some helpful advice. |
Correction: Most of the first five books are about Lestat. Up until The Vampire Armand - which is truncated but available in The Vampire Lestat.

Okay the saying that the story wasn't in TVL was my bad, i will admit that. I actually was skimming through one of my copies and realized I was actually past that I just haven't continued. And it's not so much that stories about Lestat bore me but more that Lestat himself annoys the shit out of me.
I think the reason TVL bores me is that it's written in how he himself would write the book. And quite honestly I think he's a narcisstic asshole. The QotD at least was not written in his view. Hopefully the others won't be either. I think that's the main thing that bugs me. I loved the parts with Armand and Marius, and Nicholas and Gabrielle...but anything with just him talking about himself...just...ugh. I read the Queen of the Damned because it seemed way more interesting and I thought It may help me to finish TVL. And just to clear up - with the Tale of the Body Theif I only read the first few pages. Then went back to TVL. I know it seems confusing, but my mind is a little back and forth so it makes sense in my head. |
