Guten Tag! (A sample of my obsession with the German language.)

Well, to state the basics, I'm a freshman in college, and my major is both German and Pre-Sociology/Anthropology, but I won't start until this fall. My hobbies include reading, writing, hiking, singing, listening to music, composing music on my keyboard, and drawing. I'm a nature and wildlife freak, and my love for animals goes slightly beyond the "norm" (if any sort of "normal-ness" truly does exist in the world). I'm not sure if anyone here is familiar with therianthropy, but I'm a Cougar therian just for anyone who's curious. Also, I'm a Sanguinarian, and I don't think that I'm the only one here. If I'm not, then hello to all my fellow sangs.

I don't carry any solid, unchanging religious beliefs, but recently I've been looking into Druidism and Wicca and trying to decide between the two. But, what do I know? I may end up not choosing either one and just continuing on in life not really sure of my beliefs. *shrugs*

As for my style, I am, obviously, Gothic. Does that even need to be stated? Probably not, but there it is. My taste in music lies predominantly in the heavy metal department, but I also enjoy classical pieces by Beethoven, Mozart, etc. I enjoy most of all System of a Down, Marilyn Manson, Otep, Disturbed, Drowning Pool, Kittie, and several others. For books and movies, I love almost anything with paranormal/supernatural elements, most preferably involving vampyres, werewolves, witches, and wizards. I am also a huge fan of the Marvel comics movies.

The two books that I am currently writing involve vampyres in one and a genetically engineered human in the other. My songs are usually indicative of my darker side and questioning nature concerning religion.

Well, if there's anything else that you would like to know about me, then please just ask; I'm a relatively open person and not shy in answering your questions.

Thank you, Aaroneet. I admit that I didn't yet read the sticky since I wrongly assumed that it just stated things like, "Don't make an ass of yourself," etc. *grins* That is the usual, after all. So, to answer the questions...

1. What do you do? (Hobbies, job) I mentioned my hobbbies, but I forgot to mention that I am currently seeking a part-time job to have during my full-time job as a college student.

2. Where are you from? You can see that under my avatar, I think.

3. Who is your favorite author? Anne Rice.

4. What are your favorite films? Van Helsing and all the Marvel comics films (except The Hulk, which wasn't that great).

5. What music do you want played at your wedding? Haven't thought about that yet.

6. At your funeral? Actually, I don't want any music playing. I just want a sombre cremation upon a funeral pyre. (Is that legal nowadays?)

7. This IS a gothic website, so... how do you want to die? Quickly. Preferably doing something that I love, like rock climbing. I think that falling would be a blissful death, as long as it's a very long drop so that death is inevitable and you get to experience what it would feel like to fly. And why a long drop? I don't want to be all broken and twisted, still living, only to die soon after from internl bleeding and whatnot.

8. What kind of casket would you want? If I decide against being cremated, I want a casket with a shining ebony exterior, ivory-white satin interior, and shiny brass handles, bolts, etc.

9. What's your FAVORITE outfit? Honestly, I don't have it as of yet. The reason being is that I have yet to buy my dream outfit, which would consist of an elegant, floor-length coat of maroon color with intricate stitchwork all over the material and a high-cut neckline. Underneath that, I would have the exact outfit and pair of boots that the woman hunter wears in Van Helsing (I absolutely love her outfit).

10. What's one thing you miss about being a little kid? Having the excuse of age to openly exhibit all my strange behavioral tendencies, like growling and sharpening my nails on objects. Beyond that, I miss being scrawny enough to fling myself up trees with the speed of a monkey.

11. What's your favorite band? Hmmm... That's a toughie... I would have to say that it's between Marilyn Manson and Kittie.

12. What kind of education do you have? What is/was/will be your major? Already answered above.

13. Why did you join? Because the Gothic lifetstyle is the only lifestyle that I was ever happy being, and I'm finally able to openly express myself physically instead of just mentally now that my 18th birthday is here.

14. If the first 13 questions didn't give it away. What is your gender? Female.

By the way, you realize those bands aren't gothic, right? There's nothing wrong with listening to them (I like Kittie, too), but they're not gothic. Just FYI.

Heheheh, yeah, I know. I didn't realize that that was expected. I never said that I thought they were Gothic, did I? If I did, shame on me. Anyway, like I mentioned earlier, I love heavy metal. I've lived a very sheltered lifestyle up until now, and heavy metal was the only thing that I could get my hands on. Once I did, I was hooked (that was about five years ago that I started sneaking in "bad" music, LoL). Now I am quite familiar with several heavy metal bands, but not with any bands that I can be certain are labeled as "Goth." Could you please list a few? I am definitely up for them. Anything with eerie/ethereal tunes and dark/hateful/sombre words I will undoubtedly fall in love with.

And yes, you didn't say your bands were gothic; but you say you are, and Goth is mostly about music.

Well, some goths define gothicism exclusively by the music; gothic rock/darkwave etc IS goth to them, so to properly call yourself a goth, you would need to at very least be acquainted with gothic bands. I personally see being gothic as internal and the music as more to the sidelines.

I like lots of metal as well, but my musical tastes are very varied. When I first came here, I was given this link:

It'll list a ton of gothic bands, each (at least in the initial post) with a link to a youtube video. Check it out. Oh, and you might be surprised at what some gothic bands sound like; their darkness is sometimes much more apparent in their lyrics than their melodies. In fact, a lot of gothic rock sounds fairly upbeat.

No one said goth can't be upbeat. I really doubt that if it was soley depressing and "dark" that it would have that many followers.

Yes, I agree that music is very important, but that it is more of an additional asset to being Gothic and not something that can alone define someone as being Gothic or not. For instance, I would not say that a person is Gothic just by the music that he/she listens to; nor would I say that a person is not Gothic based on what he/she does NOT listen to. I hope that made sense...

Anyway, thank you all so much for taking the time to list and refer me to so many bands! I love music, and will probably spend an hour or two just plugging those names into Google and listening to sample pieces. Like I mentioned, I have only just turned 18, so I have not felt the freedom until now to truly express myself. So please be patient with my lack of knowledge concerning such things as Gothic bands. My older sister only listened to heavy metal, so that was my only source to sneak in some good music.

And I'm not really surprised to hear that some Gothic music sounds upbeat. A lot of times, the content of the lyrics themselves is what is most important to me. However, I have always loved dark-sounding melodies; that's just my style. So I'll more likely lean more heavily towards Gothic bands that sound a little eerie or otherworldly.

Actually music is pretty much the essence of Goth, while everything else is the aggregate.

What did you expect? If you said Goth is about art, then you're arbitrarily calling all artists goths, disregarding whether they want to be termed so or not.
If you say Goth is about individuality, you're forgetting about Punks.
If you say Goth is about fashion, it would be like giving spookykids VIP passes. Plus it would be obscenely superficial.
If you say it's a mindset, you're just monopolizing the qualities you want in a person as if only Goths can and should have them.

But when you say gothic is all about music, it fits.
Someone with morning hair, jeans, and an old white wife beater, but that likes the music and just enjoys a good time is much more gothic than someone that dresses in black, enjoys reading, and is always writing about love.
If you don't agree with the example above, you'd be saying that Ville Vallo is more gothic than Nik Fiend.

Welcome to Gnet. Based on your posts, I can't help but like you, and I don't think that your limited knowledge of music will be a problem in time. We all start somewhere, and usually end somewhere else.

Oh, and for the others (and you, if you want), it was mentioned that some consider Gothism to be exclusively defined by the music, while others believed that the music was not so important--just a sideline feature. I'm curious to hear what some of you really think Gothism is.

In my amateur opinion, Gothism is a chosen lifestyle that can be represented by (but not excluded to) an individual's wardrobe, makeup, hairstyle/hair color, music, open-mindedness, nonconformity, and appreciation and personal understanding for both the lighter and darker aspects of life. Am I really off? Maybe close? Please tell me your own personal opinion; it's really appreciated.

Anyway, I truly appreciate your opinions, Godslayer Jillian. We all have them, no? Thanks for all that you've had to say, and please, please do not get me wrong: I really do love music; a lot of times, music is what I wake up thinking about. I've been listening to several clips from those bands listed, and I can already tell that I am going to like them. So, if it's music that needs to convince you of anything, then I'm not dead meat yet.

However, I'm still inclined to my own opinion that music isn't everything, but is just another major part of the lifestyle. Sorry is that offends you; after all, it's only an opinion and not a fact. ^_^ Agree to disagree?

It doesn't offend me, but that 'music isn't everything' is the whole point.
Goth is virtually just about music. Aside from the music, we're just like any other normal person (in theory), because precisely music isn't everything.
Of course, there are some things that are common in the gothic community, but those are not intrinsic in the community. They're just those type of idiosyncrasies that are bound to happen within a closed community.
At the end, we can debate what those idiosyncrasies are, but the stripped down definition of Goth is music.

I am also a vampyre, but so newly Awakened that I am yet to know for sure if I am Sanguinarian or Psy. I currently think I am a Sang with Psy tendencies (I can psy-feed but it's hard, and blood sounds SO GOOD, but impossible to get). I could rant on forever, but you already probably have the picture.

I am of the same opinion as you blood moon. But I think we feel this way because we found the other parts of Goth before we heard the music so the music just adds to our whole.

Now mind you I am an old broad who found all this in the early 80's and how I missed the whole, it's all about the music, is beyond me. I just put it down to the ideas/beliefs/opinions vary from age range, where your from and who you learned from or how you came into the community.

Just my two cents worth, which basically means nothing these days.

Heh. Point taken. The one crit I have with what you have is the way you phrased the first paragraph - you wrote that goth is all about music. If you leave it as is, it creates the same problem as lumping goth with art, fashion, etc. It should be that goth is all about "the music" or "its music."

You don't have to listen to gothic music to be here. I, for example, listen to none of those bands really. I am definitely more of a punk rock girlie.

Ah, I loved the Marvel movies too. Everything except "Hulk". You're right, it wasn't very good. (Then again, I liked "Catwoman", so some of my friends feel my opinions no longer count)

Oh wow, you rock climb? That's pretty cool, especially to me, since heights terrify me.

Hey, I liked Catwoman, too! (Though that's a DC comics movie, not Marvel.) I do like some DC comics movies, like Batman Returns.
