Revealing our names on the internet is never a good idea, not even if you trust those people.
I'd rather not know your name for your safety than you revealing it to me because you trust me and finding yourself cheated.

Knowing the first name of a person is rarely a safety issue. There are many people in the world with your first name, so why is it bad to know it?

My first name is Torbjørn. I've only met a few english-speaking people who's even able to pronounce it correctly. I used to hate it and wanteda more latin-based or english name... but now I like it. It's a old norse viking name and transelates into "Thor's bear".

Oh, and I doubt very much that telling your first name over the internet can be dangerous. If at all, posting pics of yourself might cause more problems.

Knowing a person's name is a very powerful thing, y'know. In some cultures around the world, an exchange of true names means handing over control of yourself to the other person, that is why it is only done mutually.

I go by the name Rico, and it means 'rich'.

True ^^ Purposefully pronouncing someone's name wrongly can also be an attemt to confuse and show power over that person. I've had people try this on me several times.

I don't see how one can hate their name. It's your identity whether you like it or not....

Name is not identity. Name is just what you are called. It is little different than a numbe rin that respect, regardless of what meanin gmay be behind the sound.

I haven't used my real name for years. Only my parents use it.

For me, I do not use my legal names in any parameter on-line. Even for work purposes, I use my alias. It is a legal issue for me due to my line of work and also a privacy/safey issue (for very much the same reason). Said practice is most likely overkill on a forum such as this...
