Gothic couple attacked and beaten

Five charged over skate park attack
By Samrana Hussain

FIVE teenagers have been charged with assault after a couple were beaten unconscious in a skate park in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 21-year-old man and his 20 year-old girlfriend, found in the skate park, in Stubbylee Park, Bacup, were so badly beaten police had difficulty establishing their sex.

Police said the couple may have been attacked around 1am on Saturday because they wore 'gothic clothing'.

Five youths, aged 15 to 17 from the Rossendale Valley, have been charged with assault and are due to appear at Burnley Magistrates today.

The couple, who remain unconscious in specialist care units in hospitals in Manchester, were left with with serious head injuries and swollen faces.

Their condition is said to be serious but stable.

Detective Inspector Dean Holden said: "We have charged five males aged 15-17 with section 18 assault and they will be appearing at Burnley Magistrates today."

What a stupid reason to beat some one up. If you're going to brutally assault some one, at least have the courtesy to rob them so that it's not quite as petty!

But seriously, this is sad. It's not that rare of an occurrence, either, though most of the time it's not nearly as severe. I mean, they had trouble determining their genders? Yeeeesh.

Those poor people...even though there were two of them there was nothing they could do...

Lapin 08-13-2007 12:27 PM

The younger ones out of that group of little cretins are probably going to get off with community service too.

kimaru 08-13-2007 12:31 PM

They most likely will, unless one of the two dies...

HumanePain 08-13-2007 12:36 PM

This sort of thing should give us pause in our petty disagreements, and unite us against these senseless crimes against goths! I hope they get decades of their lives taken away. I hope the victims can be helped.

Let's hope that will not the case though.

MAY have been attacked for that reason. How can they know, unless the criminals stated so directly? In which case there shouldn't be any doubt.

Let's keep in mind that these aren't exactly mature adults who committed the crime. I think I remember teenagers being prone to violence and stupidity when I was young, too.

Shame that it's still a popular thing to do though.

How can people be so fucking disgusting as to harm another human being (or animal for that matter), especially based on how they look alone? Those boys are probably not going to get a harsh enough sentence, and they'll end up doing it again when they're released from jail. Violence tends to repeat itself. :(

Yes, but beating someone to the point where it's hard to determine whether they're a girl or a boy is a little excessive for some one who doesn't know what they're doing is more than a run-of-the-mill juvenile act of violence, don't you think?

kimaru 08-13-2007 01:09 PM

It doesn't matter if your goth or not , nobody deserves to be brutally attacked...

That's right.

I'm glad that even on here, more people are upset about the fact that they got attacked, rather than them having been attacked for being goth.

In fact, it's entirely possible that's not even why. It's kinda stupid to assume that was the reason.

chelseagirl 08-13-2007 01:25 PM

I can't even IMAGINE being beaten so badly that they can't determine what sex you are. I cringe just thinking about how badly mutilated their faces must be. I don't know how anyone can do that to another human being, it's just sick.

I hope that when they recover, they are able to sue all of those miserable excuses for human beings in a civil suit. You know that because they are underage they will probably all get what amounts to a slap on the wrist, but perhaps if the victims can get awarded a monetary judgment against them, it will ensure that those criminals will at least have to pay for their crimes for a long, long time (although not with jail time, at least with a heavy financial burden for many years to come).

bleedingheart344 08-13-2007 01:42 PM

All I can say is that nobody deserves to be beaten up like this. And it's sickening to think that it even might be because they were goth. I'm not going on a rant on how deplorable behavior towards us is now. It may have been something else if the beating was that bad. Just sucks some of them may just get community service.

Oh, but that's probably just the makeup! Now, if they had beaten the makeup off of them, it probably would have been much more clear. If nothing else, at least the guy now has a stellar pickup line out of it!

Seriously though, I'm sure the children will get a suitable sentence. I just don't want to see people get all lynch mob like about children, that'd be equally silly.

Clockwork 08-13-2007 01:52 PM

This just sickens me. People these days, especially those in my own age group, fill me with such rage... to just randomly attack a couple like that, and to such a condition. Just where do they get off thinking they can do that?

Though I never lived them, I miss the old days. I'd want to see these kids hanged.

Graveyard.Crow 08-13-2007 02:41 PM

Great, another group giving youth a bad name, so the rest of us who don't go around beating people up just because "we don't like your face" are considered trouble makers.

Clockwork 08-13-2007 02:49 PM

At least the offenders didn't look like goths. That should cut down on the discrimination a little.

Graveyard.Crow 08-13-2007 02:56 PM

Well they were still teenagers, and so am I, so I'm still in the scrutiny zone.

I think it's pretty safe to say you won't be affected by this.

October_Night 08-13-2007 03:27 PM

I HATE people like that.

Lapin 08-13-2007 05:12 PM

The sad part is, there are some idiot boys in my neighborhood who might do something just as foolish and cruel.

Lucretia_my_Reflection 08-13-2007 07:52 PM

This is such a shame and it saddens me that people are capable of something so horrible. This is another reason why we all need to start being more careful. So no one else gets hurt in such a degrading manor.

Splintered 08-13-2007 08:06 PM

And people wonder why I want to carry a knife with me at all times. They don't think rationally, so why whould my life be at risk.

I feel really terrible for this couple. I hope the kids are persued criminally and civilly.
