The Following Names..
Has anyone ever seen or read any of the following names in any book? If so, please let me know....
-Xerephis -Mokar Zaiath -Cerphon -Laric -Tontago -Noftin -Dagon -Fallon -Novak -Lachdanon -Abiel There are plenty more, but I'll post them later. They're al characters I've made Biographies for...so if they've been used, I don't want to come off as a Name-Thief....heh... |
The best thing to do is go to google, yahoo, altavista, ask jeeves...pick one..and search for those names to see if they have been used....
|
You can't copyright a name or a title, that's a bit...stupid.
But I have seen Dagon (who hasn't) and Fallon, Abiel, and even Novak before. But again, what does it matter? |
I have seen none of those name.

But, yeah, it is kind of stupid....we need someone to erase this thread... |
How did you come up with those names?
|
I'm working on a few novels currently, and have to make up names to use as characters....I'm creative, sort of...
|
Dagon was part of a name (either first or last, can't remember), of a character in a star wars novel. an imperial general, i do believe. novak and a few others sound familiar but i can't place them. but as long as you're not trying to recreate a character from other books, using deliberate similarities, then i don't see much problem. eventually names have to be repeated. it's how well a character is written that makes their name famous.
|
I wouldn't dream of ever stealing a character, that's why I posted these. Since there are so many different people here, I would know so much more on these names, and I've only taken one of the names; Laric. And so far goes Dagon, I got it from a dream...

Abiel: The son of Zeror and father of Ner, who was the grandfather of Saul (1 Sam. 14:51; 1 Chr. 8:33; 9:39). In 1 Sam. 9:1, he is called the "father," probably meaning the grandfather, of Kish.
http://www.christiananswers.net/dictionary/abiel.html It appears that Dagon is also a work by H.P. Lovecraft. Don't know if its the name of an actual character of his or not. Fallon: Jimmy Fallon - actor, Jennifer Fallon - author; also, a city in Nevada, something to do with London (an area perhaps). Novak, Laric, Neftis - these have searches on google too. I'd suggest searching any names you want to use, if you want to know where and how they've been used before. But I'll also add that it seems rather futile to keep changing names just because you find they're used somewhere else. If the name fits the character you're creating, then use it. Don't worry so much about whether or not its been used before. |
Thanks, ED. I was getting a little frustrated with the inanity of this post; someone (anyone) thinking those particular letter had never been placed in that particular order, ever, in the whole history of the world…bah.
And this being a gothic site I figured everyone had heard of Dagon before. But, the point is, a name does not define the bones in your bag. A name only provides recognition, a label, for your proverbial bag of bones, something people can easily identify once you’ve set the frame in place. The idea that your names are so cool and original and never been used ever is…laughable. Now, if you put as much thought into actual character development…then that’s a different argument. SO can we call this discussion quashed, and you just use the goddamn names you want, already? |
Sure, I just realized that, now we need to get a mod and delete this post (preferably before it was created).

Dagon was the name of , I believe, the Philistine god of war. He was a fish-headed god.
|
Dagon sounds familiar, but I don't know from what, and I think it's supposed to have a 'Lord' in front of it.
Maybe some demon god from Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion..? |
Abiel - A Seraphim angel(I presumed ... aka Abdiel)
Dagon - The Demon of Ocean Aka : Dagan, Great Fish Element/sin : god of vegetation, storm god, god of ocean. Shape : an idol with the head and hands of a man and the tail of a fish, and as half-woman and half-fish. Origin : Mesopotamia at Ur in 2500 BC. His cult was popular among the Assyrians. He probably began his existence as a Semitic god adopted by the Philistines after their invasion of Canaan. Myths : When the Philistines placed the captured Ark in a temple of Dagon in Ashdod, before the statue of Dagon. The next morning they found the statue lying on its face on the temple floor. They set it upright again, but the morning after the statue was again lying face down on the floor, this time with its head and hands broken off. The Hebrews regarded this as a sign of the Ark's power (Samuel 5:1-7). |
It's not a name-thief.
The 2 I've just post is from Demonic Belief in Christitanity. |
I've heard Dagon before.
Mehrunes Dagon, the Daedra Prince of Destruction, from the Elder Scroll series. :D |
Q: Lord Dagon, are you the same person who owns the website DagonBytes. If so, awesome website.
|
I went to school with Mokar Zaiath.
|
Dagon was the marine great old one in Lovecraft's "The Shadow Over Innsmouth". Of course, using the name yourself isn't plagiarism per se, but if you're writing a tale involving horrors from the deep, your readers may find it a bit derivative.
None of the other names are familiar to me. |
Novak is rather popular name in my country (especially after Novak Djokovic won Australian Open) and we probably have many novel characters of that name.
