One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Who else has read this book? If you haven't, I'd suggest you do. It is pretty damn awesome. (I'm not talking abut the film, which is barely worth watching.)

And those who have: do you think the novel is sexist, or that McMurphy is the suavest motherfucker that ever trod this unworthy earth?

Never read it. Genre?

Beatnik.
The books is okay, i haven't read it since i was 17ish, so my memory of it is kind of blah... i have intended to reread it though. I don't think Ken Kesey was sexist really.
I have read Kerouac and Burroughs more recently. Which i think the 2 of them are like the Gods of that era of literature.

I didn't read it, but I saw the movie with Jack Nicholson. It was pretty good, but I don't think I would have the patience for the book. [I'm trying to read through The Stand right now, and it's...interesting.]

Loved that movie, but it reminds me too much of my job.

Egad! What's your job?

Godslayer Jillian 02-02-2008 07:38 PM

It's my favorite book.

Tam Li Hua,

Work in a hospital. Patients are okay. Some of my coworkers...well. Lobotomies all around, folks. Nurse Ratchett is definitely my boss. Fave character: Chief Bromden.

Where do you work, because, um, lobotomies are illegal in the vast majority of the world (or no longer performed in favor of electro-convulsive therapy). In fact, from what I can gather, the last known lobotomy was performed in France in 1986. That was two decades ago, and as such, I doubt the veracity of your statement.

The movie is fantastic, I don't know what you are talking about Apathy. It is one of Jack Nicholson's greatest roles, and all in all a classic film.

Although, I must concede that the book is far superior to its celluloid adaptation.

StasisInDarkness,

Not suggesting lobotomizing; moreat, acting lobotimized. Actually being facetious.

dark_dragon_of_ice 02-05-2008 12:53 AM

I like it.

For some reason I figureds you'd have read it.

The movie is ok when taken as separate from the book but when you look at the two together, it r.apes the book to hell. I mean, the Ratched in the movie is pure evil, while the book leaves it ambiguous as to whether she's anything other than a nurse doing her job. Also, in the movie you miss out on Bromden's paranoid schizophrenic perspective, which is genius. Most importantly, the book is fucking beautiful, while the movie is kind of depressing.

Apathy's_Child, thanks for the reminder. Will have to go back and read it again. Been awhile. Currently reworking through some J.D. Salinger and rereading 'Lord of the Flies.' William Golding is good for restimulating 'the little grey cells.'
