Something that's been kinda confusing me.
So I've been wondering for some time as to how this is pulled off, but how exactly do you get that distressed huge holes in your fishnets look? It almost looks like runs in panty hose but are larger holes.
For some reason, I could never figure out what the deuce made them look like that. Obviously it's not a normal fishnet shirt though. The fishnet shirts I have seem to have a bit thicker threading, so the runs don't show. Obviously it was awesome quality fishnets. Anyway, yeah. How are those done like the classic deathrock look? |
Fishy Netoron, the fishnet god of the ancient Assyrians. Sacrifice a bald-headed accountant or something. I forget the actual ritual.

Scissors, mon ami. But for that not so perfect look, try steak knives. The snagging makes it look a mite bit more distressed.
|
I always use nails and sewing needles. Forks also give an interesting effect. Apart from that, I often use my fingers and then lightly stretch the fabric so that the threads will go from another but still stick together. That's an art, though, and needs practise. But really, to make those kind of holes you could potentially use anything that's pointy, sharp or has a rough texture as long as you've got the right technique.

Steak knives, i've done it plenty of times....definately steak knives.

Right, as far as the classic deathrock look, to be honest, we usually started out with new fishnets from wherever (Fredricks of hollywood brand was easy to come by then) then just wore them, washed them, wore then washed them, etc...until they fell apart so much that you had to use a new pair. The thing is, hoisery, of all kinds, is kind of flimsy in general and when we went to clubs 6 nights a week when the punk scene with slam dancing, etc. was still pretty intertwined, climbed over fences a lot to get into various places after dark and probably just did a few too many substances where you just do whatever and are not to careful of your clothing, they just got holes. Rather quickly too. So did skirts, shirts, etc...you could leave the hole, stick in a safety pin or start over. Don't know what you could do to get that, maybe scrub it cross some cement or something and wash it a lot, every wash a hole should get bigger.

True. As I've said, the only time I've ever been able to pull it off was by just slipping on some panty hose with cutting the crotch out. That pretty much did it, save that I've never done them with fishnet hose.
Most of the fishnet shirts I have are just really high quality and the holes pretty much had to be cut into them. They were made of a rather tough cotton. |
I wear very fitting fishnets, and with them on I cut some holes with scissors. As they're stretched, one tiny snip can make a big hole, and if it's not big enough, then it need another tiny snip.
|
Stretch them out and rig them to stay that way then go to town with a pair of scissors.
|
I've never done with this fishnets, but I've done this with plain ol' tights...
Take a knife, or anything sharp; poke a bunch of decent sized (but not huge) cuts into the fabric; occasionally make a big hole or tear; take your fingers and SLOWLY rip down some of the cuts (should run down naturally), or all of the if you prefer, all of them. |
Dance long and hard, helps if you wear something it will snag on every now and then. :D
|
Wear fishnet tights as your top. I've never bought an actual fishnet shirt unless it's been £3 in a charity shop somewhere and has been nicely finished with contrast trim collar and cuffs.
Fishnet tights can be bought for a quid a pair and you just need to rip the crotch out to make a servicable top. If you want to make holes, just try putting the damn things on over spiked jewellery or when you have snagged nails. They rip very easily unless you're careful. You can make great big holes and tears just with your hands. |
You know what's also a fun way to rip those fishnets? Parkour!

I completely destroyed my favourite pair of fishnets by trying to add a few extra holes -_-...my advice is to start small then make the small holes bigger, so you don't end up with holes so gigantic the fishnets aren't wearable anymore.
|
Yeah, I probably cut about 5 ahhh... strings? links? to make a head-hole big enough that one side slips off my shoulder.
