Political music
What bands do you know that center their lyrics on something politically activist?
Obviously there's a lot of hip hop and punk bands that are heavily political, and I want to know more bands. I'm just getting tired of bands that have no ideology. Here's a list of most of my political bands: A Spectre Is Haunting Europe Against All Authority Against Me! All Gone Dead Antibalas Bob Dylan The Clash Conflict Dead Kennedys Dead Prez Discharge Flux of Pink Indians The Deep Eynde Discharge Jefferson Airplane Leftover Crack Phil Ochs Rage Against the Machine Rudimentary Peni The Scooterz The Sisters of Mercy This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb The World/Inferno Friendship Society Help me make the list bigger. |
I heard that The cure's new album is going to have some political songs, but who knows when that album is ever going to come out!
|
The Varukers and Crass come to mind, though I can't stand the latter.
|
Jillian, why? I have over 6 dozen bands I could name. But I'll name a few ones.
ANTI CIMEX MOB 47 CRASS GOVERNMENT ISSUE CIRCLE JERKS KAAOS DISCLOSE GAUZE G.I.S.M THE SS TAMPERE SS SS DECONTROL MIDDLE CLASS JERRY'S KIDS GORILLA BISCUTS I'm too damn tired to name all of em'. |
System of A Down (sorry, had to)
Trial The Nightwatchman Some of the stuff by Muse Public Enemy Yeah, I guess I'm not that much help here. Ah well. |
Green Lady listens to THE VARUKERS? Fucking awesome! I love those guys and Crass is a very aquired taste. I love em though, they are my patch on me arm!
|
M.I.A. is pretty political.
"Kala" is a wonderful album, by the way. |
Good stuff. The ultimate political album for me is the "Not So Quiet On The Western Front" punk comp from the early 80's. If you can find it, get it.
|
Yea, M.I.A. is great, and I want to dress like her.
I DO have a ridiculously tacky shiny gold jacket. True story. |
Sweet. I want some bondage pants. Badteccy, you what you should play on your show? Cococoma! Check them out they just released an album on Goner Records. The best track on there is "Too Tired" its garage punk with a keyboard!

Ministry and K.M.F.D.M. (The WWIII album, in particular)

However, this Wednesday I am playing Crass, Flux of Pink Indians, and Rudimentary Peni, and Tilt |
Cool! KMFDM has always political, that's why I love em!
|
I'm surprised you didn't mention London After Midnight, Jillian; I thought you liked them.
|
Yeah, particularly their last CD. I just mentioned the bands in my "Political Music"
|
Um... Laibach? Nitzer Ebb?
Mussolini Headkick Borghesia If my partner was with me right now, she'd probably be able to compile a fairly comprehensive list for you. |
All Gone Dead?
I like them, but political wise, they strike me as someone hitting issues that are blatantly obvious. Blood for oil tripe. Love them, but they DO get pretty cheesy sometimes. |
Yeah, but their song Just 80 Miles West was worth mentioning.
|
Oh hell yes. LOVE that song.

I'd put ALL GONE DEAD into the same "sophomoric" political camp as TRAGIC BLACK. If you're going to try and write serious lyrics you need to spend as much time on your lyrics as you do on your hair and makeup.
There are alot of musically really good punk bands who I just can't get past the politics (i.e. WHITE PRIDE, although they were not really serious about it, too many did take them very seriously). |
A few "political" bands that come to mind that I didn't notice mentioned:
SEX PISTOLS GANG OF FOUR D.O.A. THE EXPLOITED REAGAN YOUTH |
Here's some more, some more political than others
7 SECONDS FEAR ANTI-FLAG RISE AGAINST BAD RELIGION BAD BRAINS THE EXPLOITED MINUTEMEN COCK SPARRER |

I would agree for the most part. AGD and TB kinda strike me as people who haven't faced much hardship. I could be wrong. |
