I had exactly the same problem a couple of years ago. I tried to dye my hair black with red streaks by applying the red to sections and tin-foiling them, then dying the rest black. The red didn't take at all, and some of the black managed to seep under the tin foil - it looked shite. I ended up getting it re-done professionally, which looked awesome! My advice is to let the experts do it for you, unless you've got the time and inclination to keep practising until you get it right. If you just want to dye it one colour all over though, that's easily done at home (especially with a friend or partner's help) :-)
