It's not so much that they're "disguised" because we stole them (which I don't think you were implying, but a lot of people do), so much as they were good times to celebrate because early Christians looked a lot less suspicious if they could celebrate their own holidays on the same days as the ancient Romans.
They didn't get thrown to the lions that way.
