In the process of moving my friend and her very Polish family today, Theresa's mom asked that I throw away a mouse that was on a sticky trap. Well we saw the mouse while we were moving all the stuff later, then a little after that, Theresa saw it move. I went over to it and it was still very much alive. We all felt terrible for the thing. It's entire body, face and everything, was stuck to the trap. It was terrified. Among one of our trips to the store, we picked up a high powered bb gun. I took the trap into the backyard, with Kate next to me to oversee it, and Theresa far on the porch, not wanting to watch. I loaded up the bb gun, took two practice shots, then took aim carefully at the mouse's side, and fired. I fired twice more to make sure the poor little guy was dead and no longer suffering. I feel terrible when I have to do stuff like that, but I know it was the most merciful thing I could have done. I apologized to the little guy afterward, then we sacked him and dumped him. I was more relieved after he was dead, because seeing the fear and pain in his eyes when he was alive was too much.
