The one thing my mom was good for was teaching me how to sew. I make my own corsets and I've got a lot of vintage clothing that I have to repair before they look vaguely wearable.
I suggest that you start by repairing or imitating clothes that you like using a basic pattern, and then build up to creating your own designs. You won't be able to make up your designs immediately, and even if it takes ages, the end product is worth it.
