He was French, lived 1866-1925, and is reputed to have helped 'invent' modern mysic (along with the likes of Debussy). He's pretty much the opposite in style of Mozart, actually. Whereas Mozart was apparently once accused of having 'too many notes' in his music, Satie worked and worked at his pieces until there wasn't a single extraneous note.
He was also a bit of a case too. He wrote little jokey notes for the musician only to see - things like 'as though dreaming of a promotion' and 'wearing a wooden hat'. He was also quirky and terribly shy. One story goes that on a visit to a friend's house, he was too embarrassed to ask where the bathroom was and instead nipped out into the garden when no-one was looking!
A lot of his music is readily available and used quite frequently - in fact, I can guarantee that if you listen to his music, you probably will recognise it!
