Though a PTFE (plastic) or rubber-backed stud can help minimize the damage, and a vertical labret probably won't cause any erosion since neither end of the bar touches the gums. Also need to beware of teeth being chipped by the little disc inside the mouth... Basically anyone who gets a lip piercing should keep in mind it probably won't be a permanant addition to their collection of artificial puncture wounds.
