You should never revert to putting another person down just to compliment someone else. That is pretty low, whether you intend to do so or not. You should NOT compare people in here. Compliment them in a dry manner.

Ask Rawrwithcows what my initial reaction was. I'm sorry that you were hurt by the comparison, even if I think it wasn't a particularly apt one.
