It's not more barbaric and extreme. It's just more fundamental.
Islam was more liberal than Christianity in medieval times. They just haven't changed their costumes much.
The only reason Christianity is not as bad as Islam today is because of the influence secularism has had on western thought.
So, yay for free thinkers!
