It's a cliche, but practice really does make perfect. When I started I'd practice four hours a day, just playing around, making the guitar make weird sounds or trying to make it sound like other songs I'd heard. I taught myself with out tabs or music, so I learned everything by ear. That's a brilliant way to get to know the sound.
