I don't know. For me, I just feel comfortable in black lace and satin and velvet and big froofy skirts paired with clunky boots, topped with a 3$ pair of halloween cat ears. I don't know exactly why I like things like that, other than it being a feature of my personality... I'm attracted to dark things, and find weird things to be beautiful, like grungy, peeling, stained walls or a dead tree in the middle of a bog, or the scariness that comes with sketchy neighbourhoods like around 11th avenue and 50th street in New York.
I like contrast.
