Just because someone listens to something that the mainstream deems to be goth (Tool, Manson, or NIN) hardly makes them unmovitated to listen to other music. I'm a big fan of NIN, but I also enjoy The Sisters of Mercy, the Cure, and Christian Death. I'm a big fan of industrial/ebm, as well. If I see something I like at Hot Topic, and it's within an acceptable price range for myself, I'll buy it; same goes for Target, Value World, the Salvation Army, the internet, or any of the stores in the mall. I don't really give really care where I buy my shit at...if I can afford it without putting myself out for important things, I'll get it. If someone takes him or herself and their "gothiness" too seriously, and writes me off because I like NIN or I got a pair of tights at Hot Topic, they are hardly worth my time and are quite stupid for being so narrow-minded.
For the record, goth is actually derived from the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths. Most people who call themselves "goth" don't even know who the Visigoths/Ostrogoths where.
