The age of consent is an attempt to keep children safe, but in my experience, it's more about helping parents control children and causing "children" to, at times, deal with problems that are really unneeded and unwanted.

Unfortunately trying to get a law passed on the persons eligibility to have consentual sex based on maturity would be harder than trying to get a law to restrict people who drink irresponsibly from drinking, and even harder to enforce than drug laws. I can't imagine how you could possibly enforce it, and you couldn't simply make sure they used protection everytime because that would be part of the reason why they are inelligable in the first place.
Then there is the fact that those immature idiots make up a great deal of the American public, in part due to the fact that their irresponsible sexual decisions lead to children, who they raised irresponsibly, and those children grew into irresponsible adults. When will people learn majority rule doesn't work, if only people with some sort of intelligence were the only ones allowed to rule and vote, maybe then we wouldn't have problems like state budgets being weeks overdue...... and Bush. Better yet we could get rid of the whole damn two party system by adding more parties.
But yeah unfortunately for lostintranslation and myself we live in Wisconsin where as I've said before the age of consent laws are very strict..... not like it ever stopped anyone.
