I don't think I can say this for the whole situation, but the kids in my area have really over-protective parents. That's not to say I wasn't restrained, but all these kids do is sit out on their front lawn picking flowers because they're not allowed to bring their toys outside and cross the road to see the other kids or they just ride their bikes up and down the same stretch of pavement. It's sad because where we live isn't that dangerous, the road is never busy and the street is small enough for the adults to keep their eyes on their kids.

By the age of 10 I'd fallen out of a tree, became friends with some of the kids in the other neighbourhoods and got a dart stuck in my arm. But nothing seriously bad became of it. It's fair enough for parents to be concerned, but not to let kids have a little bit of experimentation with mild danger in my opinion isn't right.

Though I guess it really would depend on your childhood overall.
