The person dealing with the situation is the one it's about, not the other person. Let him talk, and shut up. If he doesn't want to talk about it, why the hell should she bring it up?

When you are so close to someone who is going through something like this and you don't ask any questions about how they or their loved one are doing it sends the signal that you are uncomfortable talking about what is going on and most people would therefore feel like they can't go to you if they want to talk. This isn't to say that she should sit him down and have a long conversation about it but asking something simple like "how are things going today?" helps to open the channels of communication without pressing the issue or making him feel forced to talk about it.
