I hate doctors.
I hate doctors, I really do. About a month and a half ago I started having head aches that lasted most of the day that would flare to migraines, nausea, vomiting. Then, about a week later I got a massive tooth ache. Went to the doctor figuring the whole thing was an infected tooth that was leaking little bacteria into my stomach. Tooth causing head ache, bacteria causing stomach problems. They gave me a script for antibiotics and pain pills and I made an appointment to see a dentist figuring all would be well after the dentist took care of the tooth.
Fast forward a week and a half. The tooth is gone, the pain pills are gone, the tooth/jaw feels fine and, unlike before the pain pills ran out, I have a head ache most of the day that flares into migraines. I go back in to see my doctor and they give me some BS about it being "rebound head aches" from the pain bills, however, they schedule a CT just to be sure and then schedule a follow up for one and a half weeks later. During that time I am to take no pain medications. That includes no form of OTC pain relief. I suck it up and comply, spending a week and a half in pain most of the day and agony the rest.
The week and a half goes by and I go back to see the doctor. They inform me the CT was clean, no cancer festering in my brain (o well, maybe next time) and prescribe me a preventative. Appointment is scheduled for two more weeks to follow up. Keep in mind, working in a call centre, I'm unable to work this whole time.
So today was the follow up appointment. The preventative has decreased the duration and severity of the migraines. They still come daily and the head ache is usually there when it isn't. I inform the doctor of this and reiterate the fact that not only can I not work this way but the I also mention the fact that, before I had to endure a week and a half of torture, I hadn't had to deal much in the way of migraines or head aches the whole time I was on pain medications while waiting for my dental appointment.
The doctor says he'll write me out a prescription for fioricet to deal with the continued migraines. I get home and look it up, I always look up medication before taking it, and he prescribed me a freaking barbiturate. Nasty little pills with side effects like face planting in a puddle of your own drool at worst and feeling of mild alcohol like intoxication at best. They also have another side effect of being addictive.
I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt. Well, the doubt has been erased. Shortly after arriving home a migraine started flaring up so I popped one of the pills and guess what? Instead of feeling like a painful head it feels like a painful head stuffed full of cotton. It hasn't even kicked in to its' fullest yet my train of thought has no tracks and my eye lids may as well be lead.
How is this better than a prescription of something like Tylenol 3 or Vicodin? There's been a few times where I've taken opiates for prolonged periods, other than recreation, and the only side effects were feeling very relaxed, itchy, energised (ADD, caffeine calms me *shugs*), and in a really good mood.
The worst part is that, in researching this medication, I found out there's a formulation of the same medication that has codiene in it. But no, doctors go out of their way to not prescribe stuff that actually works. Even more so if you're a guy. I work with this chick that started having the same issue after I did, not complicated by the infected tooth. By the time I went in to see the dentist she was back in to work with standing scripts for a purse full of stuff from 1,000mg naproxins to low grade narcotics.
This isn't the only instance I've seen where doctors wouldn't prescribe or clearly under prescribed pain medications. I had to rush a friend to the ER one night. While he was there they shot him up with all kinds of nice drugs like morphine. They scheduled him for surgery to have his gull bladder removed in a couple of days and sent him home with a script for 10 Vicodin 5mg's.
Anyway, I think I may have had more to say or maybe not. Hard to remember. Words are starting to blur together in my head and on my keyboard.
