All this self-labelling/others-labelling/what's my label/can I have this one please stuff - it's just a matter of the dog and his tail.

When you let the label control or limit you, you are letting the tail wag the dog. Disregard the misconceptions or pathetic attempts of the outside world to attach appropriate labels - they don't get it, there's no reason they should feel as though they have to get it, and it really isn't something anyone of us can control. Instead, think of the subculture as the tail and you as the dog. Do you let it direct and move you? Or do you consider it a part of you and contribute to its direction?

I know it sounds a bit silly to take it all so seriously, but if individuals aren't independently bringing in ideas and creativity, our subculture ends up as nothing but brainless clones. That's when our undead charm finally wears off. We'll be well and truly dead.

So, labels are useful, labels are fine. Just - don't set out to chase one. Let your relationship to whatever label you find yourself with be a symbiotic relationship.
