In the later years of his life, Pierre-Auguste Renoir continued to paint even though he had crippling rheumatoid arthritis and developed progressive deformities in his hands and ankylosis of his right shoulder, requiring him to adapt his painting technique. His friend Henri Matisse asked him, "Why torture yourself?"

Renoir replied, "The pain passes, but beauty endures."

On the day he died, he also said, "I think I'm beginning to know something about painting."
