Marvelous story. I've quite a soft spot for these kinds of "lost" artistic masterpieces tales. The painting is not quite attractive to me, but it does, in my admittedly inexpert opinion, seem to bear some of the stylistic hallmarks of Michelangelo.
Hopefully further examintion of the work reveals it to be legitimate!
