Alan is rough around the edges in that he isn't very mellow. He argues against almost everything he disagrees with in a rather abraisive manner, and doesn't let a lot of things slide (unless he's much pickier about small things than I thought). He is often in agreement with you, so you don't find him so sharp.
Alan tries as hard as he can to be rational (and I commend you for that, Alan), but he does so to the extent that he sometimes forgets the emotional side of an argument, and how important such things are to humanity. Emotion is not always good, but nor is rationality always good. Faith and curiosity - both emotions - are two main things that allow humanity to accomplish things against all odds.
I think he also forgets the variety of people who make up the human species.
Anyway, that's my general opinion of Alan. I think he's a great guy, and really wants to change the world for the better. Maybe I'm just cynical.
