a few things come to mind here....
1.) cutting, in itself, is not necessarily a "problem" unless and until it is used to manipulate others around the one who cuts. for many, cutting helps to relieve stress and / or to help an individual deal with a real or perceived trauma at some point in the cutter's past. granted, it is not the most socially acceptable way to cope with one's life but as michael wagner puts it - "teething infants often bite their own hand to manage pain. cutting can be thought of at that developmental level." if you're not familiar with wagner's work - look him up.
2.) since we now know that you are in the eyes of sorrow's psychiatrist / psychologist / whatever, one must wonder the ethical implications of your actions here as well as referring to her as "a very close friend". there are a few people here employed within the medical profession, myself included. this post of yours is awkward at best, inappropriate at worst.
3.) this whole drama is rather pathetic. an attention whore cuts, screams at everyone who shows concern to get away from her, begs for someone to understand her and then, of all people, has her psychistrist (?) come to a website to defend her actions? the word "manipulation" blinks rather brightly with neon lights here in my mind. how about yours?

most cutting occurs for one simple reason - that of an individual learning to cope with an unsettling event or series of events. most people are not so deep or unique to qualify a statement such as the one you made.

actually, you're the only one to pop in here and announce that you're a psychiatrist. perhaps you should display your own credentials to back up your contention. no one else pre-empted their statements using a title.
a funny thing about those in the mental health profession, much like judges and lawyers - you believe the education you've achieved and the title you hold makes you "right" no matter what you have to say. whether you wear it like a badge or utilize means more along the line of a passive-aggressive personality, mental health professionals by-and-large are not questioned by society in general, leading to an internal sense of vindication, regardless of what others think and feel.

this, i'll take exception to. you display your title as a psychiatrist, however being that this is the internet, trolling for others to write to you raises an alarm. how do i know who you are? how does anyone here? you could just as easily be a pedophile seeking out troubled youth. i'm not saying you are, but without sufficient evidence, you're no more qualified than anyone else here to pass judgement. that's the way the world works and so, i'm deleting your e-mail address.
