I'm guessing she is talking about fitting all of her stuff in a car. Once you become a "responsible adult" you end up getting furniture and stuff that takes up a lot of space.

That and people start giving you stuff to "help you start your new life", which really means they don't have enough stuff to have a yard sale but still want to get it out of their house and it would be rude of you to turn down their gift so you have to take it.
