The only suitable excuse for cutting is boredom combined with at least a hint of masochism. I may be bored and have slight masochistic tendencies, but I haven't cut myself for quite a long time. When I did, it was because I had "emotional pain" coupled with extreme boredom. It was quite exciting at first, but it got boring after a while.

Cutting with safety pins and such counts? I used to write on myself with pointy things, but I've never considered it cutting. It was entirely spawned of boredom, and had nothing to do with a need for attention (as far as I can tell). I did it for the same reason that I used to draw all over my left hand and arm.

Happily, I am no longer the same person I was then.

I hate the term "cutter." It sounds like the name of a mean shark on a kids' TV show.
