Why does Fred Astaire think he knows Goth? That's like Mary Poppins telling us about Black Metal.

Watch out HP, Fred has four thousand years of academia under his belt...or was it his frock? Back? It was behind him. So he'll deconstruct your words and make you cry.

Why do people keep falling on this? I already learned; learn with me.

Sir Helpmann makes a ridiculous accusation and tries to preach all high and mighty about something we all had agreed upon a long time ago.
But instead of saying something like "yeah, we already knew that" or saying nothing at all, you try to think of a comeback, which we all know will make Helpmann come with just all the possibilities for shit-flinging that will ensue.

Well, with you it's different. It's genuinely entertaining. Not all of us are up to your level; too many take it too personal.
Not being condescending

That's not Fred Astaire... it's Sir Robert Helpmann.

That's like confusing metal with Goth.

What, exactly, would you consider "goth" music? Is there anything beyond Siouxsie and the Banshees and Bauhaus? Are there any new goth bands? Is it even possible for a new band to be goth, or has entry into that category been forever barred?

Helpmann, is it nice up there on the moral highground?

There are so many scatter-brained definitions of gothic.

I have never heard of another sub-culture so discriminative. Fishnets, that's not goth, that's punk. Mohawks? That's 'Metalhead', totally not goth. Hot Topic, only posers buy from that store.

God, it's almost like people instinctively excluding others becuase they feel they are in position to, like in a restrictive club where they can dictate whom is and is not allowed...

Oh My God, I got it! Tired of being rejected? Go Goth! You can make any absurd claim you want as to what is and is not as long as you fill an outlandish clothing style that you can point out how other people are so much not like you.

Seriously? Sir. Helpmann, for someone of your extreme Abundancy of gothic knowledge, For someone of such profound knowledge, for such a trend setter, You must have started this trend to, It's brilliant. I'll never feel outcasted again, I'll just outcast everyone else around me and believe myself to be better then them...

Oh, I'll have to work on being oblivious to my own transparency in the manner as well.

No it isn't. Punks only sporadically wear fishnets. It's goths who have made it a staple.

*Sound of my mind snapping, unable to comprehend the level of Helpmann's idiocy.*
Please go and be "awesome" somewhere else, perhaps back to Obnoxious.net?

I was talking about the whole exclusion game that runs rampant in the subculture. No one, Not a damn soul in the gothic collection, has right or reason to dictate what is and is not goth. As if there is some secret code hidden away throughout the ages and only a privilaged few are allowed to memorize it to police the style.

It's immature and childish. Quite frankly, if a woman dressed all out in Aeropostle and AE, jamming out to Justin Timberlake decided to declare herself goth, the more power to her. Who is anyone to decide to if her tastes are good enough for the abstract Ideal of 'More goth than thou'ism?

That example's rather extreme.

Ummm.. no. That's when we get out the eyeliner, black dye and music, THEN ask her if she's goth.
There are certain basic things that make one goth (music, some fashion, maybe a cheeky love of plastic bats), just like there are certain basic things that make one... say, Muslim (belief in the unity of God, Muhammad's prophethood, Life after death). These have nothing to do with a "Gothier than thou" or "Holier than thou" attitude.

What are you talking about?
I said mohawks are not metal-head. At all.
How does the thing you said above address that?

Do you know what disgusts me about you?

It's that that moment someone mocks your mowhawk you take offense.

Who gives a fuck? Why the hell should you give a fuck?

You knew the job requirements when you put on the uniform.

You have some interesting points here and there, but on the whole you whine and complain like a bitch.

Grow up.

No one has ever mentioned my mohawk; you're such a whiny bitch. He made two statements; both of them wrong. He said fishnets are punk and mohawks are metal.
I corrected him.
Or what? You agree that fishnets are punk?
You're an idiot.
